I can't see the pictures that well. But you described the growth as cotton like and cotton usually means fungus. Unfortunately fungus usually only attacks a fish that is already weak from something else. You could try an antifungal medication but I think it might be better to do salt baths instead since we are unsure of a diagnosis. Salt baths are great for sick fish, IME and it may help the fungus as well as whatever the underlying problem is that caused the fungus.....parasites or a wound or something else all together. I would be weary of putting medication in a tank right before leaving town.
