I'm thinking about making my own biological filter for a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. I have a 5 gallon tank that's just sitting around. The theory is that I should be able to fill it with media, a mechanical filter, and use a pump to circulate the aquarium water through it.

Am I right in my thinking?

Is a 5 gallon filter enough for a 55 gallon aquarium?

Can anyone suggest a pump to move that amount of water?

Thanks in advance!

I think people usually use a 20 gallon tank for a sump for larger tanks.
But I've never done it personally.

There is a DIY video on Youtube showing how to make a canister filter out of a 5 gallon bucket,,,
