Amazon Swords

I love amazon swords, I started out with 2 and now I have LOTS! 2 questions:
-How do you separate them when they get thick?
-Mine used to be a stem with a sword at the top, now mere grew and those are about an inch wide from top to bottom, why is that?

When the baby begins to sprout roots. You can cut it from it's mother and place it into the substrate (not to deep). Mother nature will take over from there.
