Would this work as a substrate. I have decided to go with pfs, but really want a black substrate that won't break the bank. Would this stuff pose any problems or would it work?

again, java ferns and anubias are going to be my main plants due to my lighting restrictions.

It is perfectly fine. I have it in my 20 long with RCS and Scarlet badis. It is an inert material. If you plant into the substrate, root tabs are a must. You will need to rinse this material thoroughly. Rinse, rinse, rinse.
