How long after an initial planting do you wait before pruning and/or rearranging? I've noticed that if I mess with some plants (i.e. crypts & java ferns) they tend to stress out while other plants seem to take it fine. It often takes me a few days to determine where things look best...

With the Java ferns, I would wait until the new plantlets have at least 5/6 leaves. Then gently pull it off and plant next to parent if possible. If you constantly uproot them, they will be stressed and take more time to reacclimate themselves to their new location.

You should try to plant crypts, and leave them forever if possible. Movign a crypt almost always causes crypt rot, though a root tab underneath it after replanting does seem to minimize the rot.
