How long should nitrites last in new tank setups.

Nitrites will always be present, but should be at undetectable levels once your bio filter is established. If cycling the tank, I would expect nitrites to start to decrease after a couple of weeks of showing up on a titration test. If fishless cycling, and if they climb too high, it can stall the process and at that point I would recommend a 50% water change to cut the level in half. That can often get the cycle moving again.
