Get either a 100w for a 25g or a 150 for a 40
I have a 150 watt placed horizontally on my 30g long (3') tank. Been keeping my temp at steady temps for years. I believe I'm using the Visitherm 150 watt heater. Here is the review I posted:

Are you supposed to position the heater beside the filter or something...or where?

If its by the filter it sprees the temp around for an even temp

I like Ebo Jagers- I have some that I got used 5 years ago and they still work great. I also like my Rena Smart Heater a lot, it's very accurate and attaches to the intake of the Rena canister filters so there is less clutter in the tank.
