I originally planned to build a stand for my 20gal long, tank. of course i couldn't stop there, so instead i decided to purchase a custom 29gal rimless that fits the stand perfectly. I literally just ordered this tank from Glasscages.com which was amazing, i emailed them at 9 this morning for a quote and got an email back at 9:04 and it is supposed to arrive on march 15th. but anyway i plan to move what is in my 20 long into this new tank and i thought i would document it all here. Bellow are a picture of the 20 and the stand (a work in progress)

Here are the only 2 corals I have right now, a hammer and dome zoas. I plan to get some xenia and maybe some mushrooms or something, I'm not so sure on corals. But the ones I have seen to be doing great

I am going to try something that i don't believe i have seen before, I am going to use this HOB filter as the overflow box to my sump. with a little modification, ill add a pvc through the bottom of the filter so water drains into the sump. I figure since this will be operated by a pump this will solve the problem of power outage overflow, and i really like the look of this filter.

So you are trying to make yourself a redneck CPR overflow with an aqualifter basically...just without the ability to lose siphon as it is all pump. I don't know how I'd feel about trying to match two pumps to make sure your intake and returns are the exact same. Sounds like a trap operationally though the theory can be sound.

Yea, I was thinking of that, i was planning on using a adjustable flow pump and i've tried to figure it out a little with the height the return pump has to go. this is the pump i was thinking Eheim Compact Plus 5000

And there's nothing wrong with a little redneck innovation, i love to screw with things, you should see my xbox, built it from scratch, the only thing i bought was the dick tray

Not disagreeing with the innovation, I made sure that my saltwater tank worked one way or another as well. Just think this matching two pumps is too much hassle.

yea, i get that, but im definitely going to give it a go. Ive been trying to think of it and in theory, wouldn't the sump be gravity fed? If i drilled a hole at the bottom of the filter, the water that would not drain into the sump would just flow back into the tank

for example there would be a 150gph flow into the sump with a 1/2" diameter hole drilled into the bottom of the filter, the filter gph is 265, so there would be a constant flow into the sump and the extra would flow back into the tank

I just ordered 25 lbs of Florida dry rock, I am so excited to be doing to get home from school on Thursday and home for spring break, so I can really dive into this build

So I have a question regarding cycling, my girlfriend might literally kill me if I have both of these tanks going at the same time, If I take the live rock and everything out of the current tank could everything be immediately moved over or will there still need to be a cycle?

You can move everything over imediately. People do tank transfers all the time. Just watch the parameters and do water changes if needed.

Been working a lot on the stand, I need to put the front doors on, and everything is looking good, the dry rock comes tomorrow and I hope to get the scape done tomorrow

Here's what I've come up with for the rock scape, would love to hear some feedback on it and where to put things, I also may get some coral tomorrow, anyone have any suggestions for something hardy and easy?

The thank set up on the stand, no sump yet, rocks and some sand in, this is probably all I'll be doing for a little while

Okay so on Friday I will be filling the new tank up with water and getting it all running and hopefully moving things over. But one think that I'm concerned with is I'm unsure how much love rock I need to move over from my old tank

A pound to a pound and a half per gallon is a good amount of live rock.

Okay that was riddled with spelling errors haha, but yea I know the rule, but I have about 25 lbs of dry rock, but since I can't have both tanks running at the same time, so I wasn't sure how much I need to put in of the live rock I have to make sure it stays cycled

Switched just about everything over, so far I am really happy with the outcome
