i have been testing my 20g water everyday. its always low ammonia, high nitrite, mid-high nitrate. even after a 30-50% water change everyday. i test right before water change and half an hour after water change.
my readings are
ammonia- 0 to 0.25ppm 0.25 most of the time
nitrite- 5.0ppm...
before the water change. i had a 4.0 ppm ammonia, either 2.0 or 5.0 ppm nitrite , about 0 ppm nitrate
after about 40% water change i did yesterday.
the readings are 0.50 or 1.0 ppm ammonia. same nitrite, 40 or 80 ppm nitrate
is this normal? i have no idea...ammonia dropped, and nitrate...
the new one im getting is Eheim classic canister filter 250. and im planning to use both of the old and new filter in the new tank for a while for cycling
so i had a 20g tank with a small filter.. im starting a new tank and adding few new fishes.
can i put the old one in the neww tank with the new filter running at the same time to speed up the cycle?
if yes. can i put the fish and new fish in right now or soon?

im wondering if i could use multiple substrates in one big fish tank.
i dont mean like mix them together
like i line them up as in columns.or rows
one area for soil for plants that needs it. the other for play sands, white sands, and the rest the area for decor' sands.
does this work?
