    ich Tx and plants/snails

Depends on the meds. I believe those containing copper or malachite green are deadly to inverts like snails and shrimp. Not sure about formulin. Unless the meds are specifically designed for scaleless fish (like the plec and otos...and it should say right on it), use it at half dose. It will...

Need some alternate medicines to treat Columnaris UPDATED

I grabbed this list from www.fish-disease.com: Furanace, Fungus Eliminator, Fungus Cure, Furacyn, Furan-2, Triple Sulfa, E.M. Tablets, Tetracycline, or Potassium Permanganate. Medicated foods are also recommended. If they are still eating, I'd go with medicated food. You can make your own; one...

    ich?

Everyone is suspect as its not always visible. In the case of ich its best to treat the entire tank instead of isolating. You don't want to treat and heal a fish in QT, and have them break out again when reintroduced.

    Weird Fungal growth in tank

Yuck. Hiya thetrix and welcome to Aquariumadvice. While I have never seen a fungus quite like that in a tank, your description is...erm...descriptive LOL Coupla things. You say water levels are good; just to be clear what exactly are they? Also, how long has the 20g been cycled and running...

Maintainance issue on a plant tank

It MAY have been the gouramis, although I doubt it. I've heard they are not the best tankmates for bettas (something about competition as both are up at the surface for air and both build bubblenests) but I have yet to see a post about it here. Quite possible, if the nitrates were over 40ppm...

Maintainance issue on a plant tank

*starts laughing* You asked! Yeah, I haven't followed my own rules *slaps self* They can be a problem but pretty much only within themselves; male gouramis are territorial towards each other and can be pretty damn aggressive. There are 2 unexcuseable reasons why I have 3 LOL: I started with 2...

    New 46gal. FW tank.

Tis quite possible, especially since you could smell some ammonia and you didn't actually test it *smacks roadster's hand* Should have left it! Or tested it; as long as it was under 5ppm it wouldn't have stalled the cycle and there would be plenty of ammonia for the bacteria to chow on. What I...

    General maintainance questions

Awesome post silvia! Have a few kudos for working so hard :) Just a coupla clarifiers for you 3Corsa: NH3 = Ammonia NO2 = Nitrite NO3 = Nitrate Ammonia is toxic to fish. Burns them, especially the gills and the fish can't breathe. Nitrites are toxic to fish. Competes with oxygen (kinda like...

    Question on feeding.

I have quite a fish food collection LOL and my guys get: Bio-Blend (my loaches also lurve em; so do the angelfish and they ALL look like mr creosote afterwards LOL), OmegaOne flakes, Hikari Algae wafers, Hikari Tropical sinking wafers...

    Something in the water???

Hrmmm. I also live in an old apt where the water occasionally comes out rusty, but have never lost fish to it (granted I don't do water changes when it does, but I'm guessing you don't either). I wonder if its something else? Not sure about a buffer, but if you're on a public water supply you...

    what's going on here?

Also did a little research, and came across this article about Amquel: http://www.novalek.com/kpd58.htm . LOL While I definitely don't have the backround sweets does (awesome explanation sweets! I may borrow it from time to time if its alright with you) it appears Amquel converts ammonia in a...

    Running Carbon to Remove Medicine

*grin* Sounds like you know what to get mom for xmas/Channukah. Ahhh, you've Bio-Spira right in the house. Excellent. No matter what the med package says, antibiotics WILL muck up the bacterial colonies; they aren't fussy about what bacteria they kill (there is an issue about gram positive and...

    cloudy water after setting sand

You'll want a filter which turns over between 6-10x the tank amount per hour. So yes, Ehiem filter you have is just not sufficient enough to filter your tank. You'll wants something which turns over a minimum of 300 gallons (6 x 50g) an hour. You may still need to do those water changes. The...

    What to do?

Heh homestarrunner is just awesome. As for the salt and temp increases: I started off with 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons (so 11 tablespoons for my 55g tank). I dissolved it in a gallon of warmish water. I knew that wouldn't be enough, but figured it was a safe place to start. I then went out and...
