arachnid is the scientific name for spiders... and my bad attempt at a joke
Thanks for the link and explanation tmurphy171, I think I've got it now. Tonights results were the same, 0.03 (I didn't add any ammonia last night)
I added 1ml at a time until I reached 5ppm ammonia (3ml total) I should add this amount daily until the nitrite levels start to rise right...
Hmm, after rereading this a few times I'm still not completly sure I understand... can anyone with the same brand test kit (hagen master lab) shed some light on this? I never was much good at chemistry lol
Doh, i missed this part in the test kit instruction booklet
"If the result from the color chart indicates that the ammonia level is above 1.2mg/L you will need to obtain a PH test kit to determine the ph level of your water. Once you have the results of your ammonia test and your ph test, you...
Hmm thats what I thought.
We've done both test (tap and tank) twice now and the results are the same... 1.2 (or possibly a tad higher) in the tank and dead on 2.4 out of the tap :?
Is it possible my new test kit from bigalsonline is bad?
Hmm, should straight tap water have ammonia in it? I was alittle confused by the ammount of ammonia in my tank, so just for kicks I tested my tap water.
The tap water actually has more ammonia than the tank water... its at 2.4
is this normal or is my city water treatment plant trying to...
Hey guys, I just finished setting up my new 29 gal and did some initial testing.
All that was in the tank at the time of these tests was 29 gallons of city tap water 30lbs of gravel, the emperor 400 and Bio-Coat dechlorinator. The test were done with a new Hagen master kit. Let me know how...
Welcome to AA Lifez... I haven't been here long but I've been here long enough to know these folks know their stuff :)
I was recommended a book called "A simple guide to Freshwater Aquariums", by David E. Boruchowitz
In the last week or so I've read it cover to cover... and feel like I've...
I've never used either method (yet) but I asked this same question 4 or 5 days ago, so I'll pass the answer on to you :)
Yes the shrimp method will work for FW too, but you can do it with run of the mill ammonia from your grocery store. Here's a link that gives instructions on this method...
If it was wintertime I'd set up the tank next to the heater vent for a week or so and closely monitor the temperature without fish in it to see if it fluxuates with the furnace kicking on and off.... but in may we don't have much need for the furnace
The spot next to the heater vent is...
Hey guys, I'm trying to pick a good place for my new 29gal tank and I keep running into problems.
The first place I thought of is about 4 feet away from a heater vent, another place I considered is about that distance from a window unit air conditioner.
I know putting it too close to either of...
Welcome to AA fish_newbie
I'm a newbie myself, but From what I've read, as long as you have a good filter that really stirs up the water, you dont have to have an air pump... the filter will aerate the water enough.
I'm no expert but I'd say with the whisper power filter on that tank...
