Thank you for all your encouraging comments! I am trying to see it in as a learning experience as well. I certainly won't go doing that again! I am pleased to see that a couple of the platies survived in the big tank, and are hiding behind the filter. That cheered me up a bit.

This has turned into a very interesting chemistry debate! Fish tanks really are great for teaching about you biology and chemistry! I might keep mine for if I ever have children... though they might find any deaths upsetting, but I suppose that happens with hamsters as well!

Even though the medication was meant to be alright for catfish, I stopped using it the day before yesterday because I was worried about the effect it was having on my catfish. But he was dead this morning. It's very sad. He had years left in him; apparantly his type can live for 20 years...

Thanks for your replies. Definately meant nitrite! I use Interpet tablets for testing. Would take it to aquarium shop but they use the same means! Had it about a year, maybe more. Says on box is ok for more than 2 years. Though I have very little trust in all the water testing kits I have...

Oh and the feather-fin catfish seems to be moving his gills faster than normal, but I could be imagining that as well.
