    where is my lionfish?

Wow... this is a doozy. I lost Skittles, my Royal Dottyback one day. Took me a while to realize it was gone. I thought that it was just hiding like it always did. I never found a corpse, and I only have a couple of small snails that hitched in on some live rock. I assumed that my cats either ate...

Keeping aquariums warm in the winter when no power

I had a two day outage last winter. Thankfully, I didn't keep my freshwater level up to the brim. So, as time went on, I would put in about a quart of hot water every hour or so until the water in my water tank got too cool for this to be feasible. In the first day, this wasn't bad. The temps...

    Home for a rope fish.

I had a rope fish once. He loved to curl up and hide in all sorts of things. Actually, my rainbow shark got rather upset with him when he tried to steal his home. So, I put a conch shell in there, and he ended up spending the days in the shell (letting my rainbow go back into his home), and he...

    another id question

What's the thing on the very bottom of the picture? Is that another type of sponge? It's exactly what I have growing on the underside of my live rock that I was curious about in another thread.

    Concrete tank

I don't know how well this would work, but why not get an old chest freezer, clean it up real nice on the inside, cut the front of it, then use glass to cover the hole, then make a tank out of it? Maybe it's just me, but I've always had it in my head that picking up an old chest freezer...

    This is intersting

I can understand how hard it would be without a picture. Even so... why would going from a tank with a 50/50 bulb to some generic plant bulb from the hardware store cause such interesting growth on my life rock?

    This is intersting

To make a long story as brief as possible, I'm moving soon. This means that my tank needs to make the move. Thankfully, I only have a clownfish who has been doing very well, so I'm confident he'll make the move. Even so, the stand that my tank is set up on is the one I want the tank on when I...

    What salt and why?

Still pretty new to SW, but I use Instant Ocean. The price was decent, it came recommended by many as a good budget salt, and it comes in a nice bucket. So far, so good.

First reef tank. 3g JBJ Picotope *56k get a sandwich*

That puts my 29 gallon to shame. Then again, I had some financial issues a couple months into setting it up, so things haven't gotten to where I'd like them.

Winterizing Pond With Turtles and fish

    I wish goldfish ponds didn't have a $10,000 fine in Maine. :(

    sand

Personally, I wouldn't bleach anything that's going to go into a tank. That might just be me though. Usually, I stick with thorough rinsing. I don't seem to have many problems from that.

    What do you think?

When I cycled my first SW tank not too long ago, I didn't even use shrimp. I just threw a large dose of fish food into the tank, then I let it sit for I think close to a month. That worked out very well for me. After cycling a freshwater tank with fish and having major die-off, I learned my...

Best temp for a reef tank?

I like to keep my tanks at home around 80. So far it's done very well for me.

    Caught a nudibranch!

Being new to this, I have to ask. What is so bad about those things?

Are sumps absolutely necessary for a reef tank?

Seeing as I myself have never used a sump, I can only assume that the biggest advantage to one is in keeping levels more stable more easily.
