NO you do not need a biowheel, it is jsut a feature on a line of filters made by Marineland. I would recommend putting a little more gravel in. sorta slope it upward from the front to back, helps give a nice appearance. i am totally freaked out by my pleco, im always scared hell like stick to my hand when its in there. I dunno they are just freaky, cuz they stick to everything bah.. gives me the shivers.

hmm my gf has a single one in a 1 gallon tank. I think thats alright for a single fish that is as hardy as a betta. All we did was take cycled water from my 35 gallon and then put the fish in a few days later. And its been pretty healthy since. Shes no pro so she doesnt do any waterchanges. But...
