Hi :-) you don't have to do heat/salt.
Salt is just a natural immune booster to help the fish heal if they've been scratching or have wounds.
Heat ( 86 ) is the best method. I know you said it's a "bad time" but, yes, it's slow, but it works and won't harm the fish like the meds.
Before I...
Thank you so much.
It's hard to be on this forum bc I miss my tanks so much. And unfortunately the apartments we have to "choose" from don't allow fish tanks above one gallon. :-(
Thank you everyone for your support and prayers.
We filed with FEMA and met them last night to sign our declaration.
They said it's going to be 2-4 weeks before we can get in to our apartment.
We've lost everything in our apartment. All we have is our dogs and a bag of clothes.
Our...
Just saw pictures of my town ( Seaside Heights ) and I'm going to assume we don't have a house anymore.
Good luck to everyone and thank you for your kind words.
I can't do anything.
I have the tanks running with no lights and I'm not home. I fed them minimally yesterday and did a WC last night.
To be honest the way things are looking i don't even know if I'll have a house when we get back, let alone fish tanks.
I had to evacuate bc I live 3 houses...
Here's a really good article on ICH-
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php
If you have the means, a new heater would be great bc the higher the temp the faster the life cycle of ICH is. If its lower, it takes longer.
It took my tank 16 days at 86 ( no salt bc I had a Pictus and they...
Ok- the thing is, if it is necessary I'd have to evacuate. I wouldn't have my car.
Right now, today, I don't have cash for a generator- even the smallest one.
How long can my tanks survive with no filter/no aerator.
I'm so screwed.
They could have.
My first tank was a 5g also and the store sold me 4 platy 4 mollies 2 snails and a pleco and I wondered why the mollies died next day.
Was your QT tank cycled? Throwing that many fish in a small space could have thrown the tank into a mini cycle.
The fish were stressed from...
I have a really dumb question... Weather forecasters are predicting that Hurricane Sandy is going to slam NJ on Monday night into Tuesday or Tuesday. I live right on the beach ( 3 houses in HOORAY FOR ME!!!)
What can I do to prepare my tanks for a power outage if one happens? Or anything else...
Well 80-84 isn't bad, bc that's how a lot of things, like ICH are treated are with heat.
With 6 platy's in a 5 gallon QT your parameters could have been the issue. ( platy's have very big bio loads )
I'm sorry for your loss, tho. It's never fun to lose a fish.
... You should really try to get those trates under 20. I'm not saying that could be the cause of this mysterious spot, but 40ish is kind of high.
As long as he's eating and acting ok, and your parameters are under control, I think he'll be ok.
If it is something, clean water will help :-)
I've attached a picture of the aqua clear HOB filter.
On the bottom left is the motor- it comes off and inside is the propeller. Take a q-tip and clean all the gunk out. It should be taken off and cleaned every few months bc all that gunk causes the motor to fail.
I clean mine once every 6...
