The other fish in the tank are much larger so he cannot eat them. I just want to feed him something better. My pet store sells crickets so maybe I will do that. With crickets, do I just put a live cricket on the surface of the water?

Yes, there are other cichlids in the tank. I just want to see if I can net out 2 or so in a breeder net, then leave the rest for the parents. This way I know at least 2 survive.
Woke up this morning to find many baby Convicts. Can I net some into a breeding net to ensure their survival or is it too soon and they still need to be with the parents?

I just tested my tap water again and it is 6.8, sorry I tested before and it was 7.6. Also, I am leaving just plain tap water out overnight to test again tomorrow and see what happens.
