20 ppm nitrAte is actually ideal for plant growth. So don't sweat that at all. A lot of people add nitrate into their tanks to keep the plants fertilized.
As for raising Kh and GH. I've seen suggestions on similar threads to add baking soda ( sodium bicarbonate) to raise Kh then add Epsom...
Seachem acid buffer and alkaline buffer are NOT phosphate based to my knowledge. Use them together with the dosing chart to get the desired pH ( chart is based on RO water)
Their neutral buffer is phosphate based, avoid it.
Phosphate buffers will most likely just lead to algae which consume...
Another thing to consider. When the tabs dissolve properly they will have altered your KH and GH, possibly your pH as well.
The premise is the same as the alkaseltzer. Dry forms of acids and bases that when dissolved in solution (your tank) will react to form salts, h2o, and CO2.
Better...
I keep this post around because of the graphs at near the bottom. It shows lights at different heights off substrate vs. PAR. Many different manuf. and sizes.

Decently long read. BUT it helped me understand how to achieve the desired look and what looks most attractive and why.

If you use the store bought solution (Fluval CO2 Indicator Solution) I had the dye in it already. Just fill the drop checker up.

If it helps any, I have a 16" Finnex Fugeray Planted+ about 15" off the substrate which is flourite. My baby tears pearl. I run 20-25 ppm co2 and dose 1ml excel in a 5g daily.
The 16" has 60 7000k and 32 660nm red LEDs .
If your LED total between both stingrays is comparable. And at 15" to...
Fish,
Fluval makes ready made drop checker solution if your not up to making your own.
Available as Fluval CO2 Indicator Solution on amazon. So are glass drop checkers that look just like ones on the official ADA website.
Combined is under 10$ less shipping.
A bit more wallet friendly...
If the light is anything like the light on the Spec V. It's nothing but to make it easier to see what you put in there. "Very low" intensity.
From what I've read, a Finnex Fugeray planted plus will put you solidly into the upper half of medium light. And they come as short as 12" I believe...
Your co2 should kick on early enough to get the tank to at least 20ppm before lights go on. Which is also when the fertilizers get added.
In lieu of a drop checker. You can use the Kh and Ph tests and this chart.

I'm new to the hobby, been at in since February, but I thought I'd offer my 2 cents anyways.
I had much the same issue with diatoms and had the same knee-jerk reaction, to increase water changes.
Turns out it only made it worse b/c I was just adding more of the SiO2 (silicates) that kept the...
