However I access a lot of forums through tapatalk and it's a pain having to go to a separate app with a different interface just to access AA. So I'm less likely to post.
Tapatalk doesn't cost anything to install support for and can be completed in less than 10...
They have all sorts of ways to start syphons but the reality is that the quickest and most reliable is to suck the end. It doesn't take much, maybe half a second suck and the water starts flowing. I never get water in my mouth, but it's not the end of the world if you do, just don't swallow it!
Is there any chance of getting tapatalk support installed? I know you have forum runner and your own app but I access many other forums through tapatalk and it's good to have them all in one place rather than having to open a different app.
No! Washing them out of the tank kills the bacteria. You need a gravel vac, no option here.

Tank has been established over 6 months with no problems. In the past 3 days we've had three fish die, a harlequin and our two ballon mollies.

Sunlight I've found is the major cause of green algae, one of mine gets maybe 1 hour of sun a day maximum but still gets plenty of algae growth. Although my Oto has sorted it!
Most of my fish - except for the harlequins, love an algae wafer - it's a bit of treat for them! The catfish don't get a lookin - I tend to use algae pellets to feed the catfish! - Although the barbs can swallow one of them whole!

That is mega high and your fish will be dead within days if you don't act.
Do a 50% water change, wait a few hours then do it again. Even that will only get you go 7.5 which is still high. Do two changes per day until you are below 0.25. Ammonia that high may have damaged...
