I level new tanks by filling them up to just above the bottom rim, checking all sides to make sure the water level is the same all around, then using door shims to level it if it isn't. Fill it to about half, use a tape measure to check again, re shim if necessary, then finish filling. Works...

Here's the story on these guys. They were laid, hatched and became free swimming in a twenty gal. with mom and dad. After a week of free swimming I moved all the fry into a ten gal. Filled with water from their original tank and the filter from their original tank. Skip ahead three weeks and...

Oops...and nitrites are on the rise. Hopefully by this time next week things will start to level out.

Thanks jlk. Yes I do have good test kits. I am checking levels 1ce a day and doing 2 50% water changes a day. I'm a week in, ammonia levels are starting to drop

Ok good to know. It's probably water quality issues. I'm using three feeder goldfish to cycle a 25 gallon tank.

How do you know if goldfish are mateing?

I bonused into a breeding pair about 10 yrs ago. The info I got back then went something like this........keep the water VERY clean, ie; daily water changes. Keep the breeding tank in a quiet place, ie; away from main household high traffic areas. Keep the tank basic, ie; heater, sponge filter...

Thanks for the info guys! I understand everything requires labour, I should have asked how long should I expect to be hatching BS for the fry before they are big enough to eat commercially available food. Happy fishing ......umm...... Well you know what I mean :)
