other than the obligatory betta inhabitant, you might consider:
- ghost shrimp
- african dwarf frog
also, you could probably put a paradise fish in there if it's kept alone... you may not even need a heater with a paradise fish depending on the room temperature. They don't play nice though, so...
I've had some minor trouble with angelfish and discus in the past, but with a 55 gal tank I think you're good. the rainbow shark and bottom dwellers should be ok.
agree with the previous entries, gouramis are about as big as you'd want to get... dwarf loaches might also work, they're a little larger than your standard small tank schools... but you wouldn't want a dwarf loach in solitude; 5 or more is recommended.
I have had very good success with fluval filters, both canister and otherwise (except for the sad excuse for a filter they have in the chi tank) but for what it's worth I can definitely recommend fluval canisters. good luck!
