Second thought thick pieces of metal heated up would be safer and repetitive heating you would be able to adjust your water temperature so that it does not go above unsafe levels. It would just take a long time and water vapor and or hot water spray would still make this risky and dangerous

Someone had already mentioned this but I say it again blasting sand for sand blasting is black and works really well I guess aquariums its course and not hard to clean, can be found at ur local hardware store.
