When you say soft.....how soft? I fertilize my shrimp only tank also, but only about half the normal. I also do smaller more frequent water changes. It's a 10g and I change 20% twice a week.

I have 8 of them. Have had them for over two years without a problem. I believe like Zags said you just got poor quality. I'd try again, but from a different LFS.

I also believe you have a air lock problem. Rockin the filter a little more tonight should solve it. Stick the end of the hose into very hot water for a few seconds. Softens them up, and they slide right on.

I use filter floss in mine, and replace it every month. I haven't replaced either set of sponges yet and it's been 15 months.
