Last week my local Petco said they are having a $1 per gallon sale on aquariums, I think they said starting March 18th. I believe it is a nationwide event.
Obviously bigger would be better, but a 20G Long will be fine. A 20G High, not so much, as they are a mid-range fish that likes to swim back and forth more than up and down.
Schooling, or shoaling?
Tiger barbs are a good shoaling fish, and a 20 gallon long would be ideal for about 10 of them with your 6 corys. I wouldn't get less than 5 TBarbs though.

The only ammonia other than Dr Tims that I would trust is from Ace Hardware. It should say Janitor Strength on the bottle, and I believe it is 10% ammonia, 90% water.
If you are concerned with the brass, you can always pickle it by soaking the brass in a solution of 2/3 Hydrogen Peroxide and 1/3 water for 10 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with hot tap water, and you are good to go.

Last night I noticed about 5 small white spots about the size of sesame seeds that appeared on a piece of driftwood I have had in my tank for a couple months now.
Today, I have 17 of those spots. See pic below.
Tank is a fresh water 54 gallon corner unit stocked with 19 tiger barbs, 5 panda...
