    Anger Management class?

Shaw that's a 55 right? That's plenty of room. You're just going to have to accept a few inevitable losses when you're stocking an Af. Cichlid tank. Mean guys. You pretty much have to add all your fish at once or at the very least, completely redo all your rocks if you add new ones. Another...

SoCal are eels really that dangerous? What kind of damage can they inflict? I wanna hear the octopus story! :) Ryan

    Question about filters/plumbing

When I start setting up our 55 gal Af. Cichlid tank in a few weeks, I was planning on using either an Eheim or Magnum canister filter, or possibly a Marineland Tidepool sump-type system. My question is, do both of these type filters require tank drilling/plumbing? I don't know how I would go...

    Strange bubbles all over fish

Yep, my favorite teams are Raiders and the Devils... never been to Cali OR jersey. :) Been a long-time fan though... I feel like a californian at heart. Ryan

    Outage!

15 million people without power, that estimate seems low to me. I talked to friends in Detroit and Cleveland who didn't have power. I'm really worried about my friend in Manhattan, I haven't been able to get through to her but I imagine cell phone coverage is spotty at best right now. I heard...

    Strange bubbles all over fish

We had a pair of fish do this exact same thing once, but we figured they had suffered from ammonia shock on the ride home. It was a 90 degree day and we took my roomate's Jeep (no a/c). The fish got so hot and stressed that they both started crapping in the bag like mad(!) It's a 35 minute...

    cichlid territories

If you're talking about africans, I can tell you this much: caves are important. My red zebra immediately chose a cave that was HIS. He doesn't allow anyone else in it except the pleco (who doesn't like a good housekeeper?). Zic is right about adding your fish at the same time. We tried to...

    set up for cichlids...

My Africans do the same thing. The big red zebra, OJ, has a tendency to move the almost all the gravel from one side of the tank to the other. Now that we have heavier rocks in there, he's got to be careful about rock slides! He's currently in the process of excavating all the gravel out from...

African Cichlids... what's going on here?

OK, so how can our red zebra with 5 egg spots be carrying eggs? We are very confused... Ryan

African Cichlids... what's going on here?

We have 2 african cichlids, a red zebra and a cobalt blue. We don't know what sex they are and we didn't think it would matter, being as they're different species. So our larger red zebra has about 4-5 egg spots on it's anal fin. The blue one has only one spot. So we figured blue=female...

    Decorations

We had the same deal, everything looked so fake. We went out to a local creek and picked up a bunch of nice thin, flat rocks and built some caves. After we picked the rocks we bleached them, rinsed them, bleach, rinse, rinse, rinse and did the vinegar test to make sure they were ok. Looks...

    Fish names

I was wondering how many of you have named your fish... The best thing about a new fish is watching it interact and learning its personality. It took us about a week for us to come up with our guys' names. Af. cichlids are: Red Zebra - OJ aka Orenthal James Blue Cobalt - AC aka Al Cowlings...

    Sand and rock questions...

We're thinking of changing our substrate to sand and adding some local rock... af. cichlids just don't look right in all these plastic decorations. First question, there's a creek nearby that has all a bunch of shale pieces that we can pick up... will this affect water params at all? Secondly...

My tank is a mess!!! i need help

Also, are the fishing behaving normally other than the outward physical damage? Are they still eating and swimming around? Any gasping, twitching, or unusual movement? Ryan

    Lava Rock Background

That would definitely be a concern I would have. Even some of the commercially available "aquarium safe" decorations have enough sharp edges that our fish have been injured (they're very skittish). We had to take out a few things and sand down edges. Ryan

Name 10 things we dont know about you

Alright, my turn. :) 1. I'm from a very small farm town in Ohio, when I was younger, we had chickens, pigs and 60 acres of land. 2. Besides my two tanks and a couple bettas, I have a black and white English Springer Spaniel named Leah back home, as well as a beautiful grey cat named Raider...

Few topics I need some help on..Please.

As far as where to put the filter media when you take it out... get a rubbermaid or tupperware container big enough for your filter media. Fill it with tank water, add your cartridge, and make sure it doesn't dry up. Ryan

Help... I need advice on which air pump to buy!

I've heard those new Rena pumps are really nice. I have two cheapos.. they're both loud and annoying and have no airflow control. Should have sprung for a couple decent ones, these will be replaced in less than a year. Ryan
