Please help! 10g is death trap

No the tank is about 4 months old. Weekly 20% water changes with dechlorinator. Filter media is good. The sponge is rinsed in the water i remove from the tank to keep from hurting the bacteria.

Please help! 10g is death trap

I'm about a half second away from trashing that tank. Water parameters are good. Ammonia and nitrites are 0 and nitrates <10. Temp oscillates between 78 and 80 (100w heater to combat air conditioner) The filter is meant for a 30g tank and has a well established bacterial colony. It's not...

    Cat/Loach/Kuhli/Other for a 20g?

Looking for someone to swim around on bottom that's NOT a Cory. Tank is 20g, well planted and mature. Only occupants are some zebra danios and a few otos and shrimp. Thanks.

    Any thoughts on Badis badis?

    Similar to Rainbow Shark??

My local lfs has gone to great lengths to discourage me from cichlids in a 20. There are tankmates. There are a dozen zebra danios, one sailfin molly, and three otos plus some inverts. It is medium densely planted. Have you kept dwarf cichlids in a situation similar to mine? Liveaquaria.com says...

    Similar to Rainbow Shark??

I've never kept loaches. Don't they need to be in groups? I just want a single fish who stays in the bottom 3rd. the other fish are pretty, but have no personality at all.

    Similar to Rainbow Shark??

20g. but spare me the criticism. as for the red tail, my local fish slinger said the exact opposite. red tails don't grow as large and are more chill

    Similar to Rainbow Shark??

Hi all! My rainbow shark, Jaws (original, right?), is my favorite fish by a mile. But he is quickly outgrowing his tank and my friend who has a much larger aquarium has been kind enough to take him. I'd like to replace him with a fish similar to him. I liked how he "patrolled" the lower level...

    Cleaning tips??

Hi everyone. I have a couple questions about the best way to clean the substrate in my tanks. In one tank, there is sand for the Corys and it is always clogging the vac. I could get a larger diameter vac but then it might just suck all the sand clear out. I've considered stirring up the sand...

    Second filter?

I'm shopping for backgrounds as now it's a fully clear tank all around. I don't want a "scene" just a solid color. Which would be better at reducing the yellow in the water, a deep blue back or black?

    Second filter?

Yes a good bit. Is there a way to eliminate it?

    Second filter?

Hi all. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum. I have a 20g planted tank. I do water changes of about 25% weekly. Using the test strips I know my parameters are good. The fish are healthy and happy. The issue is that the water constantly has a yellowish tinge and when I change the water, I'm...

    Stronger heater?

I have a 10g with a 150watt (i think) heater. As of now, it struggles to keep the water warm enough. Soon we'll be putting in the air conditioner and I worry that the water will get too cold. I'm considering putting in a stronger heating element, but then I worry that the stronger heating will...

Can a Bumblebee Catfish live in brackish water?

I have two BCs. I like them very much but my tank is too small and they keep eating my Danios. My buddy has a much larger tank and is willing to take them but his tank is brackish. Can they thrive in that environment?

    General newbie plant questions.

Hi, thanks for the response. New growth is there, but not very strong. Flow is good. Can I extend the lighted period in lieu of increasing the wattage? Should I clean the shed leaves or leave them?

    What's going on?

I'm not replacing the barbs. When the last one dies, I'll backfill with some more cardinals. But I agree that a 10g is tight quarters. I inspected the dead fish and saw no visible signs of parasites, mites, flukes, dropsy, or ich. Fins were in good shape, not ragged.

    What's going on?

This conversation has gone off track. People asked what alkalinity was, I answered. That does not mean I suspect it. It's just another parameter to consider. The tank has been up about 4 months and the stock list is in my signature (of course the Cherry Barbs used to be 3, not 1) :)

    What's going on?

Here is a quote from Advanced Aquarist — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog "Like the relationship between alkalinity and calcium, the relationship between alkalinity and pH takes many forms. One of the most important of these is simply that alkalinity is defined as the amount of...

    What's going on?

Based on the strip tests. The color indicates about 40 ppm. The strip suggests 120-180 is "ideal"

    General newbie plant questions.

I have a relatively new 20g high planted tank. I used CaribSea EcoComplete substrate. How do I know when the nutrients in the substrate are exhausted? Then what? Should dead leaves be left in the tank as fertilizer? Some of the leaves on my plants (mostly swords and anubia) look soggy, like the...

    What's going on?

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, I use Prime to dechlorinate water and I make sure the temperature matches the tank too. No new decorations or plants. Two Corys were added two days prior. They have showed zero aggression and themselves seem very healthy. I test with strips so the values are...

    What's going on?

I came home to two dead cherry barbs and one tetra. Water parameters are fine, alkalinity is a little low. Only other tank mates are corys and Amano shrimp. I do a partial water change weekly and feed a.c. assorted diet. What should I be looking for?

How do I know if my fish died or was killed?

The shark has actually been quite happy, even cohabitating with one of the bumblebees. But if he gets too big for the tank, I'll either get a bigger tank or sell him back to the store. Also, Rainbow Sharks are classified as semi-aggressive and the one I have hasn't gone after a single fish.

How do I know if my fish died or was killed?

There was one danio that kept to the surface ever since I added them to the tank. The rest schooled up mid-level. Maybe that one just wasn't right.
