    New 10 gallon

Tiger Barbs would be a bit cramped in a 10g! If you're sticking to a tight budget you could go with something like 6-10 of a dwarf rasbora species. I like Espei Rasboras, bright flashy orange with a little black streak (and they're right around 2$ in my area). You could check out AqAdvisor...

    Nitrates...

Plants or mosses will use up some of the nitrates in your water, depending on how heavily you go they can keep the nitrates on the low end by themselves! You could also buy water. Most grocery stores around my area usually have a RODI water filling station, you can get a gallon for like 30 cents!

    Wanted: Better filter for 90g

I cover the intake on my power filter with a relatively coarse sponge meant to be used as filter media in a smaller size filter. I used a hobby knife to cut a + shape into the top of the sponge (but not all the way through!) so it could be slid over the intake.

    Fluval LED Bluetooth Update

It's been a great light so far, it would probably pair up well with a small planted tank that's getting CO2 and ferts. I've got the intensity at 20-30% on all the color channels for my setup (5g planted w/small internal filter). The only issue I've run into is when power is cut to the light...

    Fluval LED Bluetooth Update

Fluval updated their FluvalSmart app that controls the newer bluetooth series lights and has added the ability to set multiple photo periods (finally:eek:). I did have to update the firmware on the light from inside the FluvalSmart app by selecting my light and clicking the little cloud button...

    Help pls

Agree with SaraB; they look a lot like the nerite snail eggs that are all over my hardscape.

    Vampire crabs

I've had a couple of small freshwater crabs and they all have "vanished". A top that fits will would be my recommendation!

    Adhesive removal

If it's a glass tank, I'd go straight for a razor blade. Most of them have a thin coat of oil on them (to prevent rusting), so just wash the heck out of it first!

    Need help on feeding "Multifasciatus"

I'm also feeding mine New Life Spectrum food (Thera+A non-medicated); but it's listed as "Small Pellet" for the size and is between powder and the .5mm pellets. Keeping a lot of dwarf species, this size really hits the sweet spot!

    Filters for golffish

The general rule of thumb is to just rinse or swish your media in the water you've drawn out of your tank. I wouldn't replace any media until it is physically falling apart; the exception being carbon if you use it. The benefits of carbon have a finite time span and I'd follow the...

    Filters for golffish

It pays dividends when you're cleaning filters or need to replace media, too. More media, more cushion! Just try to stagger weeks on which filter systems you're cleaning:thumb:

    Adding ammonia?

Rocks would certainly carry biofilm with them, just make sure to keep them wet in transit. Can't give you any specific info on how many you would need or want, but any is better than nothing! Failing anything else you could always just waterchange down to 2 ppm and start from there:)

    Filters for golffish

I'm of the opinion you can't over filter. If your fish can stand the water flow, you're good! (If they're struggling to swim obviously dial it back)

    Adding ammonia?

Any plants in the tank or 'seasoned' media in the filter? You might just need a jumpstart of some existing bacteria to help. I've always had plants in my tanks (fresh from the LFS or cuttings from an established tank) during cycling. EDIT Definitely check your water like 1midniterider...

Heater advice for surviving a Canadian winter

Do you have any heating in the basement at all? The majority of the insulation should simply be the fact that it's set in the ground. I'm just across the way in Michigan and have done a fair bit of basement dwelling through my youth and college years! If your basement holds around 18C you...

    New Member Intro

Welcome! I can tell you from experience that my plants took awhile to really set up in the 5g tank I keep in the kitchen. Could be anything from just needing some mulm/fishwaste to build up in the substrate to lighting (not advocating skipping water changes or not cleaning the tank, the stuff...

    55 gallon reboot

Livebearers could be an option to provide some live food for your tetras; my mom kept a few livebearers in her 75g stocked with mostly angels and tetras for awhile. They never managed to have that livebearer population explosion people experience because the other fish really had a taste for...

    Adding ammonia?

Have you tested the nitrAte level on the water you're using? If it's lower than what you have in your tank the nitrogen cycle is moving, just slowly! My first tank I cycled with added ammonia took about 6 weeks before I was moving through 4ppm ammonia in a 24-48 hour time period. Another...

Two male Apistos in 29g planted

I started this tank off with 1 male and 2 females. The desired result was achieved with two spawns. However, one damaged swim bladder, an impaction, and a mysterious vanishing later, I was left with only 2 strong fry. Now that they've both more or less grown out, what I thought was a male and...

    Adding ammonia?

When I add ammonia for cycling I never add more until it drops. If it's not dropping you might want to test your nitrItes. I've had cycles where my ammonia wasn't dropping but my nitrItes were off the chart; after a few hefty water changes to lower the nitrItes my cycle picked back up.

    mystery snail

Lower water levels won't necessarily keep the snails in, you may need to get a top of some kind. My nerites frequently visit the dry upper area when I slack off and forget to do my top-ups. I've watched them fall back into the tank trying to navigate the rim on a couple of occasions, but a...

Why do corydoras get this RIDICULOUS long fin

Maybe I should have phrased it a bit differently as I also don't see them frequently in the LFSs here in western Michigan. I do see long-fin aneus cories probably at least once every 1-2 months though they go quickly! There may a local breeder? Never asked that many questions, I'm more of a...

Why do corydoras get this RIDICULOUS long fin

Just line-breeding like most other goofy animal traits. There are long-fin varieties readily available for different corydoras species!

    New Tank Owner: Native Species

Fun tank idea! I'd definitely recommend a larger tank if you want to plan on keeping any of those species for awhile, though. If you can manage a 40g tank, you could grow probably grow them up to about 4-5" without too much worry. Even a 29g tank would give them a bit more space to live...
