I would say that a sand substrate would be best for Corys as I have heard of some instances of gravel being sharp and cutting off Corys barbels whilst they roam the bottom.. As mentioned above I would also recommend a planted tank! In my opinion the natural look is much more desirable :)

As previously mentioned you should have an instant cycle by using some of the established filter media! You shouldn't take too much as you don't want to start a mini cycle in your already established tank, so maybe a quarter (if that) :) Betta's love moss balls so if you can get your hands on...

I don't see why not! You would have to clean it throughly anyway being that it was used. Vinegar and warm water will kill any bacteria that could still be in there :)

What substrate do you have? Corydora's are great algae eaters but gravel can cut their barbels which is not good, I own otocinclus catfish which are also great algae eaters, they clean the glass more than anything though!
