Still having ammonia issues after months

My tank has been up and running with my dwarf puffers for a while now, but I am still having issues with the ammonia that comes out of my tap. I can't change the water in my tanks straight to the tank. I have to use the air out/leave in bucket for DAYS to a week before I can use it and even...

    Dwarf puffer pics

Thank you! :) I'm in North Carolina, but none of the fish stores close by would order them for me, so we had to drive to Huntersville, NC, to a store called "Upscale Aquatics" to get them!

    Dwarf puffers

My new guys are eating snails and frozen bloodworms like crazy. They are pigly little guys/girls if allowed to be. Ha! I treated my tank from the beginning with Prazipro (thanks to advice on here) and I also soaked their bloodworms in some before feeding. Hopefully, will not have to deal...

    Mid fishless cycling

You're supposed to keep the nitrites high until the nitrates show up and when BOTH of these are off the charts is when you can do a water change. That's my understanding anyway. Someone who knows wiser, please chime in if I'm wrong.

    New baby dwarf puffers

Here are the new dwarf puffers swimming around happily! They all look good to me except the last fish in the video. He/she is the one that isn't eating a whole lot and looks thin to me. Anyone else think so or is it just me?

    dwarf puffer tank ideas

I just got my five dwarf puffer fish yesterday. They are in my 28 gallon tank and I have a five gallon tank for harvesting snails. Hopefully, it will work. I've decided I agree with what I've read about breeding snails - when you want them you can't get them, and when you don't want them you...

    Baby puffers...

No - the two that are so thin don't seem to be eating well. That's why I'm a little worried. Hopefully treating the tank so soon with the Prazipro will start dealing with any internal parasite they might have. I even took some blood worms and tried using an eye dropper in front of their...

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

Oh yes, I've had them before and understand their appetite  I'm just worried about two in particular that are really thin and don't seem interested in the baby snails or the blood worms I've offered. They are swimming around fine and checking out the tank, but I'm a little concerned at...

    Baby puffers...

Yes, they've been in since about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Checked my water parameters this morning and they are exactly the same as yesterday - ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate hovering in the 20-30 range. I treated the tank this morning with the Prazipro that was suggested. I'm glad I...

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

I'm thinking I should be fine. I got five super small dwarf puffers yesterday. They are literally less than 1/2 of an inch each. I have a feeling, if anything, I grew too big of a BB colony than they needed. I also treated the tank with Prazipro this morning to be on the safe side. 2-3 out...

    Baby puffers...

They are now here and drip acclimating. Will have them in their tank soon.

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

Did one last, small water change this morning (about 2.5 gallons) and I think I've gotten it down to about 10-20, but would love someone else's eye.... I'm so excited to get my fish - we leave to get them in about an hour (it'll be three hours driving round trip).

    GH and KH reading help

I redid the test yesterday and didn't wait until the yellow was "bright yellow"as the directions said, and just when it first turned yellow....Think I got a reading of 9.

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

It's been about 2 hours since I did that six gallon water change and I checked the nitrates again and they look to now be between 20-30, not 30-40, so they HAVE come down and I think their level is fine for my puffers! Woohoo! Will try to post pictures some time tomorrow after they have been...

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

It's been up and running for two months now. I would consider it fully cycled after about a month or so. It takes less than 24 hours (more like 12) to convert 1 ppm of ammonia at this point.

    Baby betta

Just proves they are just there to sell fish and are not necessarily educated about what they are selling. :(

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

I know!! I'm so excited!! Ok - I took another six gallons off just to see if I could get my nitrates down from 30 and they did not come down. Is this normal for a heavily planted tank? (Nothing fancy, no CO2).

    Baby betta

I would not add him into the community tank with those fish who are known fin nippers, especially if he is already way small.

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

Alrighty! :) I'm sure my paranoid self will test it again tomorrow morning, just to make sure it's still in the 30 range and hasn't risen any.

Nitrate level after water change ok for puffers?

The aquarium store I've been dealing with out of town has finally gotten dwarf puffers in stock and we will be going tomorrow morning to pick them up. In anticipation of this, I just completed what I hope is my final water change before bringing them home. After about a 70% water change, I...
