    Bandit Cichlids

They are actually quite pretty fish. They have an iridescent shimmer that is quite nice. Depending on their mood, they have bold stripes all over their bodies, or just the stripe through their eye, mentioned before. I have both BR's, apistos and these bandits (I'm the one looking to give...

    Bandit Cichlids in Georgia

I am not looking for money - just a good home for them. I think two or three would be fine in either a 20G or 38G. I have not had them in with guppies, so I am not sure if they would nip at their tails or not.

    Bandit Cichlids in Georgia

I have a brood of bandit cichlids (Guianacara Geayi) that are growing beyond my ability to accommodate them. I have 30 to 40 that are looking for homes. I've found that they are not a common fish (at least in the stores and circles that I frequent). Atlantis had a pair and I bought them on...

What happened to the price of Rena Canister Filters?

Why do politics have to impact my fishkeeping? ugh. Didn't think about that, but it makes sense...

did I kill off my good bacteria ??

So many people make the mistake of using antibiotics in their tanks. Things go from bad to worse once the meds kill off the bio filter. Not all meds will. Some brands will identify that they do or do not harm the bio filter (Seachem does). Unfortunately, Jungle does not.

What happened to the price of Rena Canister Filters?

I am a fan of the rena XP canisters and have bought many of them. In October, I bought an XP3 for $89 and an XP2 for $69 from Big Al's. Now, the prices are $139 for the XP3 and $119 for the XP2. I have noticed that the prices are similar at all of the online stores I've found. To me, their...

Rena Canister filter use with Loc Line?

I have the standard rena hose going to a 5/8" hose barb on my CO2 diffusers. I was concerned about it coming off and used a standard hose clamp and it's been fine for about a year now.

    Sick GBR :(

Yes - if you can get a timer that controls an air pump to come on at night, that would be ideal.

    Sick GBR :(

What is the gh of your water? I've found they do best with gh <100ppm How often are you changing the water? Mine get sick and die if I do not change the water at least weekly - in a heavily planted, co2 dosed tank. You didn't say how long you had them - I have found that all of them die...

    Dwarf Puffer Fish

the dwarfpuffers.com site is quite nice. I'm confused, though. I swear that I repeatedly read that DPs are brackish or at least need some salt, yet the site points out that they are freshwater.

Rena Filstar XP2 for a 55 gallon tank...

I have a bunch of them. They're really quite easy to set up. The only gotcha is to make sure to have to top securely fastened to the base, otherwise you'll have a tank full of water on the floor.

    help seeding aquarium

Well, that's the problem. When I add a fish, the ammonia continues to go up, no nitrites or nitrates ever appear. My problem is that the things I am adding from the other aquariums (filter pads, bio media, gravel, etc) do not contain the bacteria I am after, so I'm trying to find out what...

    help seeding aquarium

I set up an old 10G aquarium to house some pregnant swordtails and mollies about a week ago. I have been trying like mad to get it cycled, but I'm not having much luck. I have 3 other well established tanks (~1 year). Here's what I have tried: Pulling filter media from each of the other...

    new 60 gallon need HELP!!!!!!!

I'm late to the party here, but don't clown kni[fv]es grow to over 36 inches in aquariums (48 in the wild)? Seems like somewhere around a 600G tank would be needed for it's ultimate size, though that doesn't have any bearing on the current situation with it dying.

XP3 intake too strong for fish - Solution!

I now have 2 XP3's and 3 XP2's (makes sense, right?), and have never had a problem with it sucking up a fish that wasn't already sick. A lot of times fish don't necessarily look sick, but they have very little consitution and are barely staying upright. Then, when you find them stuck to the...

    molly swimming up and down

1~What type of fish is afflicted? Orange male molly. It is not eating and repeatedly swims up and down against the glass, all day long, for the past few days. 2~What are your tank parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp, pH)? Please give exact values. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate...

    Long beginner(?) questions

The white spots you are describing is almost certainly columnaris - a bacteria infection. The behavioral symptoms you described are pretty general symptoms, and can mean a lot of different things. If they happen some time after adding new fish, get yourself a QT to house the new fish for a...

    fry goodbye and Nitra-zorb

    1. I use some filter batting that I got at petsmart - comes in a big sheet folder up in a bag. I cut a strip a bit wider than the intake and a bit longer than the circumference of the intake, and wound it around, and used some zip ties to keep it snugly over the intake. 2. nitra-zorb absorbs...

    several questions

    1. no, this won't be a problem for the bio-fitlration. It may prevent the filter from sucking up some of the larger particles, but that's not really what you need to worry about. 2. if it's a new filter on an established tank, a few weeks. 3. YES 4. don't think so. 5. sadly, no.

    Platies eating my snails?

I have swordtails and the love to munch on my snails. I've never heard of it before either, but finally someone else is experiencing it now. I solved it by getting more snails. When I would only have one, they would kill it. Now that I have 5, the swordtails don't pick on any one too much.

    continuos live ph tester

The consencus is that the continuous ph monitors aren't worth the hassle, but I do use these: http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18478/si1380875/cl0/redseaco2indicator to monitor CO2. The liquid is blue if there is too little CO2, green if there is enough (20 to 30ppm, I believe)...
