Afra Playing King of the Tank

They've each picked a side of the tank, so no more dancing from them. I am pleased I was able to get a decent shot, out of dozen or so I took!

    What eats Brush Algae?

Flagfish rule at eating BBA! I have a similair sized tank, and had a very bad BBA problem. I put in a pair (yes, just two) Flagfish, and they had the whole tank cleaned up in about a week! I was very pleased. One word of caution, once they finish up the BBA, they may munch on plants. They ate...

my new rams - another update

The red on the fins of your male makes me think he is a bolivian ram. I should say a very nice looking bolivian ram.

    Tank Black Out without Airstone???

I think you will be fine. In fact, I didn't know you were supposed to use an airstone. I did a 3.5 day blackout last week, and didn't use an airstone. My tank was moderately planted, and I used a layer of towels and a layer of blankets to cover it up.

Any way to lure MTS out of filter foam?

That's what I was afraid of. So much for dangling a carrot in front of them! :)

Any way to lure MTS out of filter foam?

The foam in my HOB filter is full of little MTS. Is there anyway to get these guys out, or should I just let them be?

Can BGA (or algae in general) survive a dry spell?

After reading your post, I found that the green parts felt softer than the rest of the wood. Out to the pond with it!

Can BGA (or algae in general) survive a dry spell?

If I've learned anything in the past five months, it is that algae is very resilient and adapts to live in pretty much any environmental condition. I have a piece of driftwood that became engulfed by BBA and BGA. I pulled it out of the tank and set it in the garage for several weeks. A few days...

How many watts over a 20gallon long?

So I guess CO2 injection is more potent than excel? Is there any type of wpg limit that excel will not be effective at, or do you just dose more? Honestly, I don't have any specific plans in mind. I had a low-light, non CO2 tank that I tried planting and didn't fare so well with. But I was able...

How many watts over a 20gallon long?

I'm setting up a 20 gallon long planted tank. I'm going the cheap route, and will be using screw in type Fluorescent lights. I did find the non-spiral type. However, I know that the pg rule breaks down for small tanks (is mine in thatcategoryy?) and that I will loose some efficiency due to...

Lighting suggestions for a 20 gallon long (30")

So there may be no "perfect" solution. I am thinking of doing a DIY hood using 2 18" bulbs, and just have them overlap in the middle. Then I could over-drive them and get some decent light.

Lighting suggestions for a 20 gallon long (30")

I'm having trouble finding lights for a 20 gallon long tank, which is 30" in length. The trip to home depot yielded and abundance of 18", 24", and 36" lights. Do I need to settle for 24"? I know they make 20L/29 gallon hoods, are there really 30" bulbs in there, or just 24" with 3" dead spots on...

    BBA changing colors...

I agree with everyone else. When I spot treated my BBA, it would turn dark red within and hour, then slowed turned grey. Then I had a mess of dead algae to clean up! (Thank you, flag fish.)

    Some type of parasite?

How often should I be dosing this stuff? One section of the instructions says not to exceed two doses on 48 hours, while antother section says to does once a week for three weeks!

    Some type of parasite?

Nothing cottony looking, I won't be able to get a shot of the sacks. I could barely see it at all. Just looks light a slight, clear bulge when viewed straight on. I got some jungle parasite clear tabs. What shoulf I be looking for? Will the white thing fall off when he is cured? Any idea how...

    Snail ID

Actually, if I don't get my algae under control this is the route I'm planning to take. (Along with adding rocks, removing plants, and lowering the light levels.)

    Some type of parasite?

There are plants, shrimp, and snails in the main tank. This rummy nose has been removed and is currently in a fish bowl. Should I be treating the whole tank, or should I start with just the infected fish. I will have to wait until Tuesday before I get to a pet store. Any recommended medicines?

    Some type of parasite?

Thanks for the response! He is acting fine now. Last night something seemed a bit strange before I pulled him out of the tank. I've never seen the string thing move. It's always in the same position. Tank size and fish info is in the "my info" button. I added some flag fish and amano shrimp...

    Some type of parasite?

He survived the night in a fish bowl and is acting fine. Any idea on what this is? I don't want to put him back in the main tank if it is contagious, but he won't last long in the fishbowl :(

    Snail ID

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for more ramshorn. I figure if they hitch-hiked in at the same time, they should be the same size. As for the MTS, it just appeared last night when I turned the lights on, maybe they are nocturnal. I may have more of them too.

    Snail ID

Thanks guys. The MTS is staying for sure. I've only seen the one Ramshorn, and he's big enough to notice. Will he self-reproduce, or will I just have one? Honestly, I kind of like him and will keep an eye on plants. I've seen him scoot across leaves without doing any harm, so maybe he's okay?!
