    Is 0.25 Nitrites Level Accectable??

I put in some live plants into my 20g tank that has 6 fish. When I do a water change every other day, 15%, tiny little pieces of one plant swirl all over the bowl, then settle. 1) My nitrites are now 0.25 and ammonia 0.50. Is that acceptable? 2) Could the new plants with pieces scattering...

Ammonia Test is Completely Clear ???

Pretty new stuff, Master Test Kit, 10/2024. Added some bacteria after testing yesterday to both tanks. Today the Ammonia read 0.25 for both. Could it be that the older tank was already cycled and thus no Ammonia? and the newer tank hadn't had enough time to get any ammonia?

Ammonia Test is Completely Clear ???

I have 2 tanks; First is very close to 4 weeks old. The 2nd is five days old. Both when tested for ammonia, the test tube is completely clear, not even the least bit of yellow. Anyone know what this means? Both tanks have a few fish. On my test color scale, it shows yellow as 0 ppm...

To Add Bacteria or Not to Add Bacteria, THAT is the Question

Searched but did not find any thing on this here on forum... Thinking about starting a new tank, I've read by googling that some think it's okay to shorten the cycle, some think not, by adding bottled bacteria like Dr. Tim's One and Only or Tetra SafeStart. What say you guys, those that...

How Do Fish Recognize Another of their own Species?

I finally googled something that may explain it. They SMELL their own kind. They can supposedly even smell their own kind for their sex, m or f. Probably Mollies can smell other different kinds of Mollies. I have a albino balloon that often hangs around my Cookies and Cream Molly.

How Do Fish Recognize Another of their own Species?

It seems they do. Do they say, "hey, there's another Panda Molly! I'll go join them!" Neon Tetra: "Hey, let's go school with THOSE guys!" Are fish that smart? Plus if a female looks quite a bit different than the male, how do they know they're the same and thus, "hey, let's get...

Will Fish Starve if you Don't Feed Them?

Thanks all. GF and Betta were the first two I got. Going to stick with them, in spite of their reputations. Got to Petco today and that list above went 80% out the window. Got 2 Panda Molly, a Dalmation Molly (they had NO Black Mollies), some Albino fish and some blue silver dollar looking...

Will Fish Starve if you Don't Feed Them?

My 20g tank is very new. Talking about goldfish, Siamese F. fish, looking to get cherry barb, paradise fish, tetra, black molly, albino guppy, cichlid. No live plants yet; the shop owner said my newly placed gravel had no nutrients, thus I shouldn't have live plants yet.

Will Fish Starve if you Don't Feed Them?

Will they starve and die if you go 2 or 3 days without feeding? I keep reading 'don't overfeed?' so wondering if you can skip days and if it actually might be healthy to do this?

    Cycling a New Tank

So if I change the water every few days, say 20-25% in my 20 gallon tank, I wouldn't have to do those tests? (Ph, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia) It'll just cycle thru naturally ok?
