    Fry identification

Updated pics of the fry. Anyone have any ideas? Some have orange tips on the tails which is making me think it's fry from the black/blue platy as well as an orange platy which passed a few weeks back.

    Problems keeping fish alive

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yeah it's usually a 50% water change I do every week. I tested my nitrates today and they are actually under 10ppm for the first time since my tank cycled. I was always under the impression that neons and platys were "hardy" fish so I was really shocked when I lost so...

    Problems keeping fish alive

Hi Sara Nothing that strikes the eye. I have been working from home the past 3 months due to covid19 and my desk is beside the tank so I would see it a lot. There is no hiding from fish. Apart from when the platys were first added, there has been no chasing either. I'm really at a loss...

    Problems keeping fish alive

Hi all, I'm really struggling with keeping fish alive in my tropical 10g tank. I initially started my tank with 3 platys, a dwarf Gourami and 6 neons. Since then, 4 months ago, all of them bar 1 platy have passed away. The strange thing is that the fry from what I believe is the platys...

    Guppies- is this normal? #newbiealert

.......... Hi Blueberries In spite of guppies commonly being regarded as a "hardy" fish, in my experience, the fancy ones certainly are not. Its advised that the pet store water is not added to you tank as its parameters may be vastly different to your own (PH, GH, Nitrates, Nitrites...

    Fry identification

2 x orange platys 1 x black/blue platy 2 x neons 1 x cory catfish I know that its most likely to be platys but the black fry seemingly are making me think its offspring from the cory catfish.

    Fry identification

Hi all! I have just noticed the first fry in my tank. I did notice my platys were acting a bit strange by burying themselves head first in the substrate. All of a sudden I have 4 fry. They do look quite strange however. The platy in question is bright orange but the fry are black. Would that...

    Tetra pregnancy?

Yeah I read up about them not being live bearers which led me to here. The colours aren't as vibrant as the smaller ones as I did consider it being neon tetra disease but its moving around fine with no visible lumps or signs aside from the belly being swollen along with the reduced colour...

    Tetra pregnancy?

Hi all, I noticed one of my tetras has a HUGE belly compared to the rest of them. I read up a bit about neon pregnancy and, from what I determine, it's not an easy process as it would be compared to guppies, Molly's etc. I have attached 2 pics below. One of the Tetra on its own then one as a...

    HELP - 2nd guppy dead

Hi guys, Really don't know where to go with this one. I have a tropical tank set up with 3 platys, 6 neons and 2 guppies. Before I had the guppies, I had 2 Dwarf gouramis who also perished (1 was due to a malfunctioning heater). I really don't know where I'm going wrong. They were...

My Dwarf Gourami just died suddenly. The tank is in trouble. What else can I do?

DG's are quite "soft" fish. Trust me, I have had 2 pass from me since getting them 1 month ago (1 passed due to my heater failing and my tank going luke warm and the other 1 passed due to reasons unknown to myself). Both of mines, similarly to yours, showed no signs of stress however they both...

    Is Platy pregnant?

I was just taking it on the advice of the aquarium shop, happier if it's a male though!!

    Is Platy pregnant?

Hi all, Please see the photos of one of my platys below. She is huge compared to the other 2 and I've got my suspicions she's pregnant. I've been looking for the signs of her "squaring off" etc. What's everyone's thoughts? Pregnant or just a greedy girl?

    Help

I've also never heard of the gravel vac taking away the BB. I am only new to the game but have done lots of research about tank maintenance and have yet to come across anyone saying gravel vacs remove BB, only the excess food waste/biomass.

    Female guppy dead

Thanks fishlegend. Any time I looked in the tank he didn't seem too bothered by her and, in general, the male kept his distance from her. I don't know if its because they're quite small/young. Point noted however. If I was to get another female would you recommend a 2 female:1 male ratio to...

    Female guppy dead

Thanks for the reply TC. I bought them in a local fish store. Acclimitated the guppy along with the other guppy and neon tetras in the same bag. I also mixed the water from my tank into the bag gradually so it wasn't a shock. The guppy lasted 3 days then died. All the other fish added...

    Female guppy dead

Hi all, Added 2 guppies to my tank at the weekend past. Both were doing well with the other fish and eating well. They didn't show any signs of stress and slotted in with the rest of the fish seamlessly. I found her this morning dead lying on the substrate. It really annoyed me as she...

Restarting cycling process after washing established tank?

Did the exact same when I got my tank, made the rookie mistake of cleaning it and hence killed off the beneficial bacteria. I just started my cycle over again by adding in Dr Tims ammonia and tank was cycled seemingly within 2-3 weeks by which stage I then added my fish.

    Ammonia in tap water

Agree with AS, I too have the same issues here in Ireland. I use filtered water only when doing WC's.

    Glass cleaner - preferences

Thanks guys for the responses - I bought a Tetra magnetic cleaner alongside a longer handled sponge brush. The Tetra magnet was fantastic, did a brilliant job. I haven't needed to even use the sponge brush yet as it was so good.

    Nitrite spike when stocking

Hi all, I added another few fish today (at my tank capacity now). Before doing so, my nitrates were at 40ppm so I did a water change and got this down to 10ppm. There was no ammonia or nitrites. Since I did the water change (around 20%), I planted some plants (anubius, java fern etc) and added...

    Glass cleaner - preferences

Hi all, What's everyone's preferences for cleaning the inside of their aquariums? Do most people prefer algae brushes, algae magnets or just a regular sponge? Want to get something that effective as inside of my tank is starting to look a bit grubby.

    Plants - first time planter

Perfect KN. Thanks for the help. This may sound a silly question but can any snails go in an aquarium? Reason I ask is that my house seems to attract an occasional one in the garden and, if it wasn't harmful to the snail or the fish, I wouldn't mind popping them in.

    Plants - first time planter

Thanks guys - Aiken Drum, you're like my own personal mentor :rofl: I ordered 1 x anubias, 1 x java fern, 1 x bacopa australis and 1 x bacopa caroliniana. Don't know if this will be plant overkill for a 10g tank but I can always trim them I suppose. Is there any adverse affects to...
