I think i have gone to far...

i started with a south american tank... and i was specific to the point of ridiculousness. i only wanted species from the orinoco river basin! i've since given up that "mission" and now i also have some asian plants in my tank. they're so much easier to care for and i've re-converted my...

    overstocking question

without a doubt, by any traditional means of calculating how many fish to keep in an aquarium, my tank is overstocked. i have a 20G high, planted with a 15W life-glo bulb. i have in the last 7 months accumulated the following fish: 8 Cardinals 7 Red Phantoms 6 Lemon Tetras 2 Bolivian Rams 2...

    Blue tetras

those would look great with my red phantoms and my cardinals! i've never seen them at my LFS but i'll keep an eye out now.

    Newbie with some nasty algae

i have the same nasty stuff growing in my tank and i attribute it to low CO2. i tried a 3 day blackout and it didn't work. (worked amazingly one other time on BGA though) i'm fiddling with my CO2 setup to try and improve it now... good luck!

Which flake is the best, or among the best?

my fish are on an exclusively flake food diet simply because they won't eat anything else. i've tried brine shrimp, blood worms, sinking pellets, zucchini and peas and they won't touch any of it. i just keep 4 or 5 different flakes so they're getting variety.

about to throw in the towel...

i've read about doing this but am a little confused as to how to go about it?

i removed the biowheel months ago... :)

about to throw in the towel...

thanks for all your responses... i have checked for leaks on my CO2 bottles. i actually have three bottle - one is the Hagen CO2 system, another 2 litre bottle that is hooked into the hagen with a T-valve so they are both using the ladder system to disperse the bubbles. the third 2 litre...

about to throw in the towel...

thanks - i'm pretty sure it's fuzz algae although it doesn't look exactly the same as the pics. i've spent hours online looking up photos to compare. i have two oto's in my tank but they've never seemed interested in this type of algae. i was also considering getting an SAE to see if that...

about to throw in the towel...

oh i forgot to add that no matter what i try, my CO2 levels are too low. they're about 6... i've tried everything to raise the levels, tested all the equipment - i'm at a loss. my light are on only 9 hours a day at this point. the algae is a light brownish colour.

about to throw in the towel...

i have a 20 gallon planted tank. 65W lighting, 2 DIY CO2 bottles going, dosing with greg watson ferts, weekly 50% PWC's. i have either hair or fuzz algae covering nearly half my plants plus some black looking algae on a couple of plant leaves. i really am about to give up and pull all the...

my bolivian ram as my test subject for new camera

does the mag float really work? the algae in the picture is pretty hard to get off the glass using the algae brush and/or paper towel that i use during weekly maintenance.

my bolivian ram as my test subject for new camera

so i got my new canon rebel XT last night and unfortunately my 2 year old daughter has a cold and isn't a good model right now! so my fish are it. i quickly snapped a few just to get a feel for the camera. Here's my Ram looking pretty. don't mind the algae on the glass!

    3 day blackout miracle!

in order to combat the BGA and other algae that has been growing in my aquarium, i did a 3 day blackout. it was very hard, my husband was convinced the fish would die, my 2 year old would cry when she'd see the tank all covered... I uncovered the tank today, prepared for the worst and low and...

How many shop at Big Al's?

maybe one day i'll convince my husband to accompany me to one of those stores. the north york one is about 6 minutes from me so it's hard to motivate myself to drive all the way out to oakville (or hamilton). but it would be nice to compare stores. :)

    Fert question

i'm using those CO2 ladders... i just changed the mix last night and there's a lot more bubbles so i'm going to test again and see if there's been an improvement.

    is this true?

that would be such a sad story if it were true (which i doubt). my oto's are adorable little guys and they get along wonderfully with everyone else in my tank.

How many shop at Big Al's?

which one is the biggest in ontario? i go to the one on steeles in north york and i've yet to find a reliable staff member. i find it very frustrating. in fact i called and complained to the manager and he was appalled at what i'd been through in setting up my tank. i purposely try to talk...

    red pencilfish

yeah i've read that the only reason they're pricey right now is because they're a relatively new discovery and somewhat hard to breed in captivity. to be honest i don't like the idea of owning anything wild caught so maybe i'll check the origins of the red's i saw at my LFS. that might make my...

How many shop at Big Al's?

i have to say that i have a love/hate relationship with my local big al's. they definitely have everything i need and they have competitive prices but their advice is RIDICULOUSLY bad. on at least 6 ocassions when i've asked a question of a staff member, i've gotten flat out wrong answers or...

    Fert question

my CO2 sucks quite frankly. that or my test kit does. right now after having two CO2 bottles hooked up, i'm still only getting readings of 6.5ppm. i'm not sure what my next move is going to be...

    red pencilfish

does anyone have any experience with these? they are very pretty fish but pricey at $30 a pair. i'm wondering if it's worth it... i'm looking for top dwellers and since i don't have a cover on my tank, hatchetfish are out. :) the beckford pencilfish are nice but the red's are just so...
