Here's one thing I had for my off the scale NitrIte colors... a dilution test of NINE parts of tap water (untreated), to ONE part of tank water... will give you a 1/10th number. Mine used to be a peppermint green, way off the scale. When I did this test, it would give me a 2.0 to 2.5 ppm...

I used the ACE Brand. (The touch-silkiness test needs to be done on just washed/rinsed glass containers, with clean hands too. So I wouldn't sweat it.)

I had planned to do a week long test. I would say if they thrive for a week, you've done all you can. You could go longer if you want, but I would think 7 days is a good indication, if you're up on the fishless cycling/water changes.
