Preparing to get yelled at... :(

The filter you describe sounds like an Aquaclear or something similar. This is band aid on a major bleed but, most filters of that type offer cartridges or inserts with white chips in them that can help absorb some of the ammonia at least. You could try looking into adding that to your current...

    Question about driftwod

Yum... fish chowder with a side of driftwood! :D Yeah, if I buy any of their wood I would definatley boil before putting it in my tank. :)

    No more angels :(

I haven't had good luck with angels myself. I think if you want angels that's all you can have really, or they will just abuse everyone else in the tank. :)

    new filter question

I have a 110 gallon and I run two filters -- An AquaClear 500 and a Magnum 350. When I had a 55 gallon, I thought that the AC500 alone was enough but when I got my 110, I found I liked the combo of an AC and a cansiter together much better. In the AC I run with the big sponge, a small bag of...

    Driftwood Question - Mildew

Wow. That's a serious peice of wood, lol. Though I can tell it will look awesome in your tank. Nice find. :D

    Question about driftwod

Won't sink. Check. That had occurred to me, I was just hoping someone here had tried it so I would know for sure. Thanks, guys! :D Actually, the water in the Petco tanks looked great, I just don't trust their filtration systems for so many tanks. I don't know if there is any cross...

Single Large White Spot on Cory

Use Malafix with the Pimafin. They are made by the same people and sorta work better together. :) You have a large tank so buy the pond strength if you can find it. It's a bit more money but stronger.

Pleco ID (sorry I couldn't find a fw id forum)

^^ Wow, that is one georgous fish! I love plecos. :D Awesome.

    Question about Spotted Cory Catfish

I recall reading that female corys of any color would be rounder and fatter than the smaller males. It is possible you have a female and the others are males. On a side note, I think it's hilarious that I have three coreys and you and I have the exact same mix. Small world, eh? :D My corys are...

    Question about driftwod

I went to the local Petco and had a peek around. I noticed they were selling two kinds of driftwood -- some in tanks already soaked with what was no doubt the germy-est water known to man. Then they were selling some driftwood dry and in bags, sterilized and clean and all that -- in the reptile...

Visi-Therm Delux Heater Cooking My Tank!

This is a bit off topic but -- I bought one of these because my sharks kept smashing and breaking the regular glass tube ones. I was unaware that it was unneccessary to unplug these during a water change. Are you certain of this? I mean, you still have to plug it in and all that...wouldn't there...

What makes you like a fish?

I like fish with a lot of color, though that's not as easy to get with freshwater. I like bright active, playful ones, not ones that hide so much though I do have a weakness for clown loaches and that's the color thing again. They just look so gosh darn cute. :D

i am being overwhelmed with temptation

I am not a big fan of those bubble eyed goldfish. I have a weakness for loaches. They peek their little heads out and say, "If I was in your tank I wouldn't hide all the time. Honest." :D

Fishbowl community? You might be surprised!

When I was looking up some info on java moss, it was brought up that the moss can be very helpful in stabilizing water conditions in unfiltered betta bowls. Bettas love it and the moss feeds off of waste. If I was to have a betta in unfiltered water, I would try dumping some of that moss in...

    Substrate ?

Is pool filter sand so fine that if you used a python it would all go up the vacuum when you clean the tank? My husband had pool sand and it was rather fine....

    Java Moss Topic

I bought some java moss to help with the higher nitrate levels in my tank. I tried tying it to a rock, but some of it got loose and stuck to my filter intake so I took the loose pieces and put them in a clear glass pitcher of tank water with a rock, hoping that over time, it would eventually...

    55 gallon fish (loaches)

I have a 110 freshwater and with a python it really isn't that big of a deal. I think it's actually harder having a small tank, lol. How do you get around in there? :D

    Particles in the water

My Magnum canister filter comes with a micron water polishing sleeve and I run that all the time (I have an Aquaclear running also). Does the Fluval not come with such a sleeve?

I always find ich/white spotted fishes in lfs

I have only one place that I will buy fish from around me. The guy was real nice and showed me the cleaning system that he has for all of his fish. His tanks are all tied into the same filtration system, but it's a mixed media, wet/dry system that also has a UV thingy that zaps all the major...

    Help, parasites attacked my tank.

I don't know as much as the rest of the guys here, but if you have no fish, I would say drain the entire tank and wash both it and the gravel with a strong solution of non iodized salt. Then I would let the tank sit dry for a week before even thinking of using it again. Maybe they could offer...

    Nitrates

Well the water changes are helping. Today, after my latest water change, my nitrates were in the "safe range" for the first time, at around 50ppm. Not great but much, much better than they were. :) Having the python is a big help. I changed 30% of my water in about half an hour. I don't miss my...

    Nitrates

There isn't much around me, there is a zoo in Providence, RI. I have to laugh. I recall seeing these huge Oscars there and thinking some poor slob probably dumped them on the zoo because they got too big to feed. I thought that would never happen to me, but it did anyhow. My LFS guy said that...

    Nitrates

I did a Google search on loaches and they said that while they CAN reach 16 inches, they rarely get to more than 8 in captivity. They also said they like to school and I alas, have only one. -sigh- I am certianly not going to add any more fish to my tank. I have enough trouble as it is. :D

    Nitrates

The prime? Are you speaking of dechlorinator? I can get that locally..... I Googled Java Moss and it sounds like it could be of some assistance to me. I read more good things than bad about it. With all of my nitrates, lol, I don't see why it wouldn't thrive. :D

    Nitrates

Thanks, squawkbert. Guess it's a good thing I bought that python. It's going to get a lot of use. :D
