20 gal plans underway (with pics)

I guess I should have posted http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=100472 along with this post, so people would have all the information about the setup... :p 1. What is the "Lol" for? To be honest, it seemed sort of derisive. From the LOOKS of it, the top isn't even on yet.:) Due to...

    What salt and why?

I use oceanic. I like it a lot, it dissolves easily and I haven't had a problem with it. :)

20 gal plans underway (with pics)

Well, chiller is for when I put a 175 watt 14k metal halide bulb on it.:P The heater? Yes, but I don't need it. The tank reads a steady 77day 76night. :)

20 gal plans underway (with pics)

Hey guys :) The 20, after sitting for about a year with hermits and incremental feeding, is finally getting the work it deserves. It's pretty smelly at the moment, as I added a lot of uncured LR, but it's getting better. Refugium was added! Next will be the filtration, then the lighting, then...

    YOWCH!

Well, I'm not sensitive to any animals generally.. and I can touch them with my hands without a problem. My hands are a bit tougher and can handle the nematocysts, but boy oh boy, the inside of my arm turned blotchy red and I had little whitish/pink bumps all on the inside of my arm. I applied...

    YOWCH!

Got stung by Ritter's anemone, Heteractis magnifica, today. Right on the soft tissue on the inside of my forearm. YOWCH!!!

HELP!!!! My fire fish is sick!

Did you only float him and then put him in? If so, that was a really insufficient method, and your LFS guy should be tarred and feathered (I HATE when some LFS people give good and caring LFS employees, me ahem, a bad reputation by doing dumb crap or being uneducated like the aforemented). The...

    I need a crab ID

Yeah, I've definitely seen them in Bird's nest, too. Forgot to mention that.:P They love birds nest actually, because they are so protected in them.:p

    Plans for my 20

    1. Nope, it's a 20 tall. And I'm rigging/building the housing for the lighting myself, probably a foot or so off the water minimum. I've been doing tanks for a while now, I don't really have a problem with the constant maintenance.:P 2. Shrooms/zoos would be going in shaded areas of the tank...

nano tanks... more trouble than they are worth?

Not exactly sure why that'd be considered poor advice, or even unknowledgeable. Everyone has their own personal experience. His idea of a "pain" may be your cake walk. We all have different "pain thresholds" for maintenance. That is why we have such a diversified and interesting hobby-- people...

    Plans for my 20

Hey guys :) I've got my 20 in Orlando which has been set up for probably almost a year at this point. It is stocked with ~20 lbs of LR, ~20 lbs sand, and hermits. I keep it cycling by incrementally putting small amounts of food in the tank because I have just been too busy to really kickstart...

Who had a FO tank first, and who started with a reef?

Reef is only as difficult as you make it :P You can start out simply, relatively easily, and very inexpensively with various polyps/zoos, mushrooms. Just take it slow!

    Purple Slimey Algae?

Same idea as Melosu, but also try purchasing some Chemiclean. The stuff works wonders, have used it multiple times over the years for small cyano outbreaks in a fully stocked reef without trouble. Definitely try to keep any excessive nutrients down as well.

    I need a crab ID

It's an acroporid crab. I see them a lot, the smooth ones I'm pretty sure are safe, at best they pick at the mucus of the acropora. The hairier ones IMO are more aggressive, polyp eating. I could be wrong, but it's definitely the kind of crab that hosts to acroporas and related SPS, anything...

    Toxic or harmful coral ??

I think it's restricted to Palythoa type polyps.. Hence being called palytoxin. But better safe than sorry :) As far as zooanthids go, that is.

New LED Lights comparable to MH

Where I work we have the Solaris LED light setup over a 90. It looks interesting, but I think the doofy guys up front who do the show tanks have it adjusted to the wrong light spectrum, as when they used it to replace the MH they had on before, it grew massive hair algae  We have acros...
