sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Thanks for the support. We definitely have to give credit to the fish's toughness.

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

The closest fish store was out of tetracycline, so I didn't get the tetracycline in the tank until today. I turned on the heater, and the water temp is now ~72F. I've been doing water changes weekly, but I will increase to daily. It might be my imagination, but maybe he has been a little more...

Unfortunately, no improvement. Still very sick. Not sure what to do next.

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Thanks for sticking this one out with me. I've tried putting melafix in simply because I had it on-hand - so far no effect. Next time I'm at the store, I'll get some tetracycline.

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Tuesday AM update: I added Melafix to the 75 gallon, and the white stuff on the tail of the "healthy" silver koi is clearing up. Good news! Bad news: the orange koi is still not eating, and the Maracyn II doesn't appear to be doing anything. I don't know what to do next! I don't think he's...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Approximately 4 to 4.5 inches, but they have pretty long tails. The healthy one is slightly bigger.

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

It started out like a spot of ick, then it became cottony. After I put in the salt, it sort of smoothed over just a little bit and the color became off white, a little creamy. It is definitely not a part of his fin - it is a growth on the outside, and it sticks out from the surface. It is...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Update, Friday evening: The "sick" koi has not shown much if any improvement, and is still not eating. I am really starting to worry. He may just quietly pass away from hunger if he doesn't improve soon. On top of that the "healthy" koi now has some white spotty growth on his tail fin. It...

This is a stupid question, but how do I get an image to show up in a post?

    pH controller or timer???

Hmmmm... no real consensus. I guess both methods work, athough it seems the pH controller has the potential to be more accurate (and expensive).... Thanks for the advice, I'll have to think this one over

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

I finally bought a nitrate test kit because I read that high nitrate may help contribute to this kind of problem. Nitrates tested at ~40ppm. I changed out 75% of the water to get it down to ~10ppm, which I understand is acceptable. I am continuing to treat with epsom salt and the meds I...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Monday night: Couldn't find Nalagram at the LFS, so I got Maracyn II. The first dose is in - now to see if it works. I'm really impressed with the stamina of my fish - still hanging in there after a week. Zagz - thank you so much for your help. If he makes it through, we'll have a...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Monday a.m. Fish still lying on bottom of tank, lopsided. I won't be able to get to the LFS until after work. I'm afraid it doesn't look good.

Hyrules - no worries - I don't mind your posts in this thread. Sunday night update: I was out during the day, and when I got back at ~8pm I checked this thread. I wrote down the prescription and headed for the LFS, only to discover they close early on Sunday.... :x :x :x My fish is...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Update: Saturday 11pm Well, I think the epsom salt helped a bit, but the poor fellow is still in bad shape. He started swimming again for a few minutes, but he can only pull right hand turns, so he ended up going in circles and then going back to his resting place on the bottom of the tank. I...

    pH controller or timer???

Hello, all. I'm looking into a pressurized CO2 system for my new 75g tank, and I'm a bit confused about the best way to accurately control the dissolved CO2 concentration. My tap water has a KH of 4 and a pH of 7.6. The water in my established tank has a KH of 6 and pH of 7.8 (measurement...

    Help!!!!!

I'm not sure this will help (i.e. I'm not sure how much salt is in your brackish tank), but I had luck clearing ick at 3-4 g/L NaCl in my freshwater tank. Supposedly, this concentration of salt causes too much osmotic stress for the parasites - which kills them.

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

Saturday, 10:00am update: The sick koi still shows no interest in food, and is still just resting on the bottom of the tank. I performed a 50% water change (careful to keep the salt concentration and temperature from fluctuating), and moved the health koi to the 75g. I think the tank is...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

The belly of the sick koi appears to be less swollen this morning, which is good. Unfortunately, his activity level hasn't increased - he is still sitting on the bottom of the tank. I don't think he's eaten anything for about 2 days now (although the healthy fish has taken a liking to the peas...

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

I currently have 3g/L NaCl in the tank. Should I dose the epsom salt in on top of the NaCl, or should I change out some of the water to reduce NaCl content first? Thanks!

sick koi - bloated belly - please help!

The 75 gal is still cycling. I hope it will be ready within a week. :? I guess I could move them over earlier, but I don't know if the additional stress would outweigh the benefits of a larger tank..... Any thoughts? I put in some peas this morning, but neither of the fish were...
