    Catching a fish

What kind of fish? In my experience, different techniques work for different fish.

    How much vita-chem/selcon/garlic?

I've done a few searches here and see that many people soak their food in garlic, selcon, and vita-chem regularly. I'm wondering how much to use? As far as I can tell, garlic is just for soaking and then you pour it off and/or rinse the food. Is that correct? And do I add vita-chem and...

    starting over - need advice

I have a 26G tank that was used for hyposalinity treatment and is now fishless. What do I need to do to it to prepare it for use as a quarantine tank? Just rinse it out and replace the filter media and water? It's only been 2-3 weeks since the last fish died so I don't want to take any...

    Hypo Treatment

You can lower the SG by up to .005 a day (or .0025 every 12 hours) but you can only raise it half as quickly (.002-.003 a day).

    Still having high nitrate issues

With live rock and a skimmer, why run an HOB filter? Seems like that may be the culprit. EDIT: I have a 55G non-drilled and run an overflow into a sump in the base. I replace the aqualifter pump every six weeks as a precaution and so far I haven't had any problems with it...good luck!

Can you post a picture? Is it some sort of algae?

    hospital tank setup advice

Ooh good point, I hadn't thought that far. I'll dry it out or toss it after treatment. Tonight I caught the gramma and the dartfish so there are now three fish in the hospital tank. I still have to catch the chromis, cardinal, and a wrasse. And the mandarin, of course, although I don't...

    hospital tank setup advice

I forgot to ask - I put some live rock rubble that was in the sump of the main into the 26G to aid in getting filtration established. Is there any reason it shouldn't stay in there when I begin hypo treatment?

    hospital tank setup advice

Here's the plan. Let me know if I've missed anything. I have the 26G set up at with an established but undersized filter (from my 10G QT) and a wrasse that was in QT (he's going to have to go through hypo with everyone else since I'll need the 10G for the mandarin. Who knows, maybe I'll be...

    hospital tank setup advice

I've read that article before. It recommends running a filter in your sump at all times but doesn't say how long it would take to seed a new one. I'm still not sure where the balance is between seeding the new filter and treating the fish asap.

    hospital tank setup advice

I did QT all new fish for a full four weeks, that's why this is so frustrating!! Kurt, are you suggesting that I leave the fish untreated for two weeks to get the filter seeded? Won't the ich get out of control?

    hospital tank setup advice

I need to set up a new hospital tank to treat my fish with hyposalinity (this is my 2nd outbreak of ich despite using a QT, so frustrating). I picked up a new HOB filter today and will start running it on the sump of my main tank. How long would it take to establish enough bacteria to handle...

    tiny palm trees

I found a picture! I was having no luck finding anything online doing google image searches for all the suggestions so far, but I opened my Aquarium Corals book (Borneman) and flipped through every soft coral pic only to find on page 117 with the description of "Family Clavulariidae...

    tiny palm trees

I have xenia in another area and these look different (for one thing they don't pulse). And I have GSP in another area but they retract and these don't. Any other ideas? EDIT: I searched for images of clavularia and it seems they all have feathery appendages. Mine are smooth along the stalk...

    tiny palm trees

Does anyone know what these are? I have a dime-sized colony of light brown translucent polyps growing at the base of my finger leather. They look like tiny palm trees. They don't retract, and they seem to be stationary. They do not look like any picture I've seen of aptasia or majano or...

I think I have seriously bad fish karma

The first new fish was a canary wrasse, quarantined by himself for four weeks and then released into the main tank. He's doing fine (so far). Then I got the gramma and quarantined him by himself for four weeks. He's been in the tank for a few weeks, and the new chromis has been in the QT...

I think I have seriously bad fish karma

Just a brief recap - I bought an established 55G last fall and added fish gradually but without a QT. No big surprise, my tank got the dreaded ICH. I pulled the fish out into a hospital tank and treated with hyposalinity. Four weeks after the last sign of ich, I brought all but one of the...

    search issue

Just wondering what the rationale is for not allowing searches on three letter words. I was trying to find posts regarding "zoanthid pox" and it won't include "pox" in my search. There are way too many posts with the word "zoanthid" for me to sort through all of them!

I am at my wits end

Slow down! (I can totally relate, I bought an established tank last fall and had no idea what I was doing in the beginning.) I would suggest running carbon to remove the meds and leaving the tank fishless for now. Set up a QT and pick up two new fish and quarantine them for four weeks while...

    Dying Shrimp

Inverts need a much more gradual acclimation than fish and corals. I would suggest temp acclimating them for no more than 10-15 minutes and then drip acclimating for a full two hours before adding them to the tank. I lost a few blood shrimp before I figured that one out (they would die after a...

500 ml or 2 liters to jump start my pod population?

IMO You can't have too many. When they arrive just float the bag for 10-15 minutes to bring it to temp and then pour it in! You can split it between your fuge and main tank if you want.

    DRAGONET Problems

You shouldn't need to pay $34 in shipping for copepods. Try this site, priority shipping is free. That said, I also have a hungry mandarin in my 55 gallon despite having added three 2 liter batches of copepods during the last six weeks. I think our tanks are just too small. SALT WATER...

    Ammonia

I'm confused. From your "my tanks" info, it looks like you are trying to cycle a tank with a tang, lionfish, clown, and a clean up crew already in it? If the cured rock was indeed enough to prevent a cycle then you're very lucky. I doubt your inhabitants would have made it. Maybe the clown...

    Stocking Ideas

What kind of lights do you have? Compact fluorescent is fine for mushrooms and zoas but you need more light for an anemone. There are some soft corals you could substitute - finger leather, xenia, frogspawn, torch, etc. With a 135 gallon tank you have many many options for fish! Do you...
