    Out of sump Protein Skimmer?

Oh by the way, I was looking into the CSS 125... would this meet my needs?

    Out of sump Protein Skimmer?

Is there a such thing as a protein skimmer that is NOT in sump and is NOT hang on back? I don't have room behind the aquarium, nor in my sump for a sufficient skimmer and would like to plumb it in line en-route to the sump or after the sump. Is this possible, or are there any "stand alone"...

    high nitrates

Have you tested your nitrates from your source water AFTER mixing in your marine salt / any buffering additives? When you do your water changes are you just taking water out, or using a gravel vaccuum to clean the sand bed? Do you have adequate water movement around and in all your live rocks...

    Light distance

My lights come on at 2pm as well, but on weekends when it comes on I've never noticed my fish twitching at all... clown, sailfin, foxface, and blue tang.

    Lunar lights?

Were the LED"s dual... (2 per socket).. if so, do you happen to have the part numbers for them? My new fixture came with deep blue moon lights... I was experimenting earlier with diff colors, and cool white... (white with a hint of blue) looks best, and the fish/nightlife seem the least...

Snails mating and Diatoms on PH and Filter

Yep, sounds normal.. give him time to settle in. They do enjoy light though.. at night time mine just hovers beneath the moon lights.

$30 dollars down th drain! Tiger Pistol Eaten

wow, already? I put my goby and shrimp in on Sunday. I have yet to see either of them. That's an expensive $60 for me.. for fish I never see. I *think* I heard the shrimp the first night, but never again. And the goby, who knows if he's still around. As soon as I dropped them in, they swam...

    Do camera flashes affect fish?

I assume it would scare them as much as a lightning strike overhead would.

    How loud are pistol shrimp?

After a lot of research and talking to various LFS's, I decided that the common tiger pistol is simply too dangerous to keep with my hermits and blood shrimp. I learned that the Randall's pistol will only grow to around 1", and take many years to achieve that length. Some literature online...

    Lunar lights?

As mentioned, LED's have a much longer lifespan. The resistor in your transformer pack wasn't the correct size, or died... which lead to your LED's blowing. That's why they sent you a new transformer with the LED's. New LED's alone would just blow again, they had to get you a new resistor in...

    Lunar lights?

highly doubt it's the lunar's, you should be looking elsewhere, or for potential electricity entering the water system.

QT? Ammonia pads really work, any hazzords?

Just curious on the type of filter you're running... (possibly the source of the ammonia...)

    blood shrimp with pistol shrimp?

Thanks! I picked up a Randall's Pistol Shrimp the other day.. he disappeared right away. Now I'm just scared when I vaccuum the sandbed during water changes that I don't suck him up... :| He's tiny though, especially compared to my pistols. He's around the length of a grain of rice. I'm...

    Algae blenny?

not sure how large your tank is, but foxface rabbitfish love the stuff. the guy I picked up my foxface from had a hair algae problem, the foxface cleaned it up in under a week on his 120g. Just be careful you don't get stung. Though the advice on scrubbing should definitely be done first, nor...

might be a better idea to take your remaining clown back to the LFS and buy another mated pair.

    suggestions for first fish

do some research on nano community fish.. (fish that do not grow very large). most goby's (there's a large variety in terms of shape/color/character), clown fish, firefish, some basslets, and your usual assortment of snails, peaceful stars (i.e. serpent stars), various types of non-aggressive...

    How many?

2x Koralia 3's sounds about right from what I've seen. I am currently setting up two Koralia 4's, one Koralia 3, plus the canister filter and return sump which generates flow as well... However I have them all on timers so different flows/pumps are on at different times. This is on a 90g.

    How loud are pistol shrimp?

I picked up a Randall's Pistol Shrimp today, he's tiny...I mean very tiny. Not even half an inch. As expected, soon after dropping him in, he burrowed under a rock and disappeared. I picked up a Randall's shrimp goby to go along with him as well, who also hid right away. Figure it'll take a...

    Live Rock

Nice rock! I picked up around 40# from my local retailer for $4.50 a lb. The remaining 130lb I picked up from a local fella I found on craigslist who was tearing their tank down for $3 a lb, the larger pieces (one piece alone is 40lb) for $2 a lb. The benefit of this is they didn't need to be...

Week 3 of Aquarium Restoration, help me decide!

Just a bit of advice.. I've always had my aquarium in the right corner of my rooms too. You should consider leaving a little more room on the left side (say, 8-10") just in case you need to reach anything on that side. It will make it much easier if you have a magnet algae cleaner so you can...

    HO or PC lighting?

I just checked, there is only one main reflector along the back. It looks like my options (in my price range) for my 90g aquarium are: 1) 4x T5's (36" - 39w) for a total of 156w. 2 switches, single power cord. 2) 4x PC's (65w ea.) for a total of 260w. Ballast also includes moonlights. 3...

Beginner Soft Corals for my tank?

I'll run my UV and canister while the lights are off... I think I can support HO or PC lighting now... please see this related post: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f14/ho-or-pc-lighting-109789.html#post931802 I guess the outcome of that post will allow this question about soft corals to...

    HO or PC lighting?

I currently have 48" regular output florescents.. (35w x2). I was at the aquarium store today, and he let me bring a fixture home to test on my aquarium, it is a 48" fixture, but it holds 4 36" T5 bulbs (39w each). Currently split with daylight/actnic. It looks good, but even better with all...

    cleanup crew?

I highly doubt it, the pull of the undergravel filter isn't nearly strong enough to damage a sandsifting star. They are some of the stronger stars out there too, compared to say, serpents. I haven't had any problems with my SSS at all, but note that he will eventually run out of food in your...
