    Chinese Algae Eater Care

I've had a C.A.E. in a 10 gal. schrimp tank for 2 years with no problems at all. He started out about an inch long and he's grown to about 3 inches now. He loves the algae wafers twice a week and scrounges the rest of the time. He's probably eating his share of schrimp too but you will do fine...

Will my stand hold a 75gal tank?

I think you'll be fine. Going by the pics, it looks like it was built for an aquarium.

Will my stand hold a 75gal tank?

Well........in order to answer your question we need to know the dimensions of the steel used to make the legs and the frame. Are there any cross braces? Bottom tray?

Please help w/ 180 gallon tank!!

Hi there Big tanks are a lot of fun/hastle but you'll love it. I have a 175 gl. full of Barbs. You'll need 2 heater, each big enough to heat the tank, much more even heat. Two Rena canister filters, that way you can clean one at a time. Depending on how much water circulation you want, you...

    Dennison Barb

You're referring to Puntius Denisonii. Yes they are a beautiful fish. I have a school of 20 in my 175 gal. tank. They get along just fine with all the other fish, including Danios and plecos, no problem at all. They look good with a school of Scissor Tail Raspboras as well, kind of like a black...

    Dosing Pottasium Sulphate

Depends on how many plants you've got. My tank is moderately plants and 50-60 ppm is where I keep it. You'd do well to go to Aquatic Plant Central and also Tom Barr's site and read up. There's a lot of people there who have a lot of knowledge they actually love to share.

Aqueon & Python - couple of questions

Instead of putting the water down the sink beside your toothbrush, put it down the toilet. Same drain and easier.

Curious as to what timer to use...?

I don't know of a single timer that has 4 individualy timed plugs. Coralife has a 'digital' one that has 8 plugs(I think it's 8) where 4 are on and 4 are off and you can set it so they flip back and forth once a day, as in 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off, not limited to 12 hrs though. Mine broke after...

    Dosing Pottasium Sulphate

I've seen where, several times, Tomm Barr has stated that the 5 ppm in Chucks Calculater is a mis-print and should be 50 ppm.

    Reusing cansiter filter foam

You got a GOOD deal. Good for you. There should be a visible difference between the two sets, one should be courser than the other. The course one goes in the bottom basket. You certainly can wash them out real well and re-use them. After I rinse them out, every couple of months, I through...

    Tiger Barb/Ruby Barb!

I don't think it's a good idea. I've never kept gouramis but I have had the others in a big tank once upon a time and only the barbs are left. They bullied the others to death.

    Barb advice please!

This is good. Cycling can take a month, some times more, be patient. Plants will also speed things up some if you choose to go that route. After it's cycled ad your fish 4 - 6 at a time over a months time. Have fun and beware of MTS. It's very difficult to combat.

    SAE Behavior

Mark, do you know for sure that they are SAE's? They are next to impossible to tell from Flying Foxes, False SAE's and Chinese Algae Eaters when they are small. Here's a couple of articles to help you tell. Will the Real SAE Please Swim Forward? Epalzeorhynchus and Crossocheilus et al.; or...

    Barb advice please!

The barb you are thinking about ids probably Puntius nigrofasciatus-the black ruby barb. They get to be a couple of inches long, I would advise that if you want barbs go with a cherry barb. They stay about the same size as a neon. I do have an important question though. It seems to me, by your...

    SAE Behavior

I wonder if they are being territorial because of the size of the tank? I've got 4 SAE's in a 175 gal. and they get along with each other and all the other fish too.

    Using bio balls

Buying a carbon filled one would certainly be a wast of money. The carbon is only good for a month or so and after that it's no good as a bio-medium and can cause nitrate trouble if you leave the carbon in there. I read a while back where some fella used those little plastic army soldiers and...

You need desperatly to do a LOT of reading. Do a search for fresh water aquarium cycling and start there.

What the heck is going on?!!

Your tank is only 2 weeks old? Did you cycle it before you put fish in there? What are your parameters? Those white spots shouldn't be there, it may be ich.

    Drop checker misleading

They don't go 'out of date' as such. Over the course of several weeks they will absorb tank water out of the air bubble in the DC and weaken. I can't tell you how many drops you need to add, as Justonemore20 says, you should be using 4 dkh solution. The only advice I can give is to go to Tom...

    Drop checker misleading

How old is the indicater fluid? It does get diluted over time. I change mine after about 4 months.
