Friable Red Algae or Bacteria. Help?

I have a water filtration system in my home that removes Chlorine, heavy metals, particulate matter with a RO Alkali filter I used. What's the best way to siphone? I have on of those large devices for water changes that use gravity but doesn't create enough neg pressure to remove.

Chemistry: Low pH, Low dK, High Calcium

I have been using Coralife Marine salt. My tank has a sump. I added an air stone to the sump. Will this aid in gas exchange? OK, I did two 5 gallon water changes Monday and another Wed. Bought Seachem marine Buffer and had the two component Bionic Calcium Buffer system. Started doing partial...

Chemistry: Low pH, Low dK, High Calcium

I have a glass cover. Up till this week had only done 1 partial water change. Tanks been running for 11 weeks (Used Cured LR and Biospira). Had yet to detect a spike in Nitrite, Nitrate or Ammonia. Was told not to do PWCs too often. Did a 10 gallon change yesterday.

Chemistry: Low pH, Low dK, High Calcium

Been a while since I was on the site. Took advice and slowed things down a bit. I have a 90 gallon Tank w 80 lbs of Live rock that I set up Jan. 22nd. Had a diatom bloom in early february. Lost some fish early on and took the slow route since then. I added a CUC (Turbo, Nassarus, Tonga snails...

    Hippo Tang w Ich

I've been adding it to the food. Should I add it directly to the tank?

    Hippo Tang w Ich

OK. I keep the SG on the main tank at around 1.018-1.019. I assume this will be a long process. The tank is FOWLR (Plus a CUC, 1 Long Tentacle Anemone which is well, and an Urchin). Should I use copper in the QT tank since the blue tangs already there and watch the rest? Will copper destroy the...

    Hippo Tang w Ich

The remaining fish appear fine. I removed the Blue Tang and placed him in a 10 gallon QT tank w SQ 1.014. I will observe the remaining fish in the main tank (No room to QT them all). I have been adding Garlic to their food all along and will continue to do so w the Blue Tang. Will perform...

    Hippo Tang w Ich

My Hippo Tang looks like he has air bubbles all over his body. Very Small white specks along his body. He is also lethargic. Feeds OK (Particularly algae from the clip). Difficult to tell if his eyes are cloudy as well. Small white dots on them. I also have a Yellow Tang, Maroon Clownfish and a...

    Ammonia

I have a theoretical question. From what I've read, Fish produce Ammonia through respiration and via detrius. The point of cycling a Tank is to build up adequate levels of Bacteria to 1. Breakdown Ammonia to Nitrite and 2. To breakdown Nitrite to Nitrate (And sometimes 3. to Breakdown Nitrate...

    New tank syndrome?

Also a beginner. Would it be prudent to add cured live rock? You would think it already houses bacteria capable of breaking down Ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. Seems like most authors agree that a Fishless cycle w LR is actually faster. Probably won't save the last Molly, but may...

Can you influence a Clownfish to Host an anemone?

Hello. FOWLR I would like to eventually turn into a Reef Tank w Anemones (I some say to start out as a Reef tank others say wait until the tanks established, everyone seems to think Anemones aren't for beginners etc..). In the event I gain the experience neccesary and the tank is in proper...

Beginner Clams. There a such thing?

Noticed you had a Tomatoe and an Ocellaris Clownfish in your 58 (BTW, beautiful tanks). Can you put two species of Clownfish in the same tank? Also, any tricks to convince them to host? I have a maroon Clownfish and hope to eventually add an anemone. Just added him/her and was thinking about...

Beginner Clams. There a such thing?

Currently have a 90 Gallon FOWLR, hope to convert to a Reef Aquarium. Have T5HO 64Wx4 w 4 LEDs, 4 inch base of Live Sand, 80 lbs LR, Sump w Rio 2500W Pump (564 gph), two powerheads (400gph, 300gph) a Coralife Protein skimmer and 9W UV Filter (Both in the sump). Is there a Beginner Clam? What...

Reef safe: "Cautious"? and other Reef questions.

How do you determine where to put corals or anemones within the tank? I assume they will not move from where you place them. Is this correct? I have a CUC consisting of mostly snails and hermits and the lionfish doesn't bother them. Do I need shrimp or crabs for a Reef tank?

Reef safe: "Cautious"? and other Reef questions.

What does Reef Safe: Cautious mean? I have a Lionfish and hope to one day convert my FOWLR into a Reef Tank. Is it safe? What's the caution. He seems to like meat, not vegatable matter and although carnivorous is not really aggressive. What do you think? What are some easier starter corals for...

Thanks. Some say Lionfish are Reef Safe "Cautious" What does that mean? Is Reef safe synonomous w Anemone safe?

    Lighting questions...

Thanks. OK, stupid question; What are LPS and SPS? How do you keep corals? Do you feed them? Do you need a refugium? Are any of the following fish compatable (In general) w corals Maroon Clownfish, Yellow Tang Lionfish? I know, i know. If I'm asking these questions I'm not ready for corals!

    Lighting questions...

OK, loved Michael Paletta's The New Marine Aquarium, but his section on lighting is brief. Have a FOWLR tank that I hope to eventually turn into a Reef Tank (I know, some people feel I should make this decision upfront, others seem to rec waiting for my tank to be established). Can someone...
