How much and how often should I feed 'em?

The more I learn about fish keeping, the more I find that there are a lot of different opinions on how best to keep fish. I recently set up a 39gal Community Tank and realized that I don't really know how much to feed them, or how often. Looking for advice only made things more confusing...

    39 Gallon Asian Blackwater Biotope

Recently moved my 39 gallon to where I am living. It is really exciting to have a "blank canvas" to get to work on. ... I've always wanted to do Biotope aquaria. My thought is to try a Southeast Asian Black-water Pool. I would want it heavily planted with driftwood; probably with some kind of...

Aggression and the Pecking Order... Where do you draw the line?

Well, crap. Never considered the tank could be overstocked... at least I've keep the water quality high considering the circumstances... I have an empty 39 Gallon that I was thinking about making into a Biotope. I'm thinking that a Southeast Asian Biotope should fit the bill.

Aggression and the Pecking Order... Where do you draw the line?

Many of the books I have on aquariums and fish keeping don't explore the topic of aggression very deeply. ... not sure if there is an "easy way" to learn such lessons.

Aggression and the Pecking Order... Where do you draw the line?

When adding a new member to an established aquatic community, aggression and other territory issues are likely to occur. I understand that this is a normal part of the social dynamic when establishing the "pecking order." I don't know much about aggression... and my recent experience has...

    Introducing Betta to Tank

My hunch... is that adding a species like the Betta, to an already peaceful situation would be asking for trouble.

    Introducing Betta to Tank

It would depend on the Betta, and the others involved. Here's my story. I currently have a Betta in a tank with a Gold Gourami and an Opal Gourami. Prior to adding the Betta, The Opal was clearly in charge of the tank. He chased the Gold and starved it for food. After the Betta was added...

    Heating Dilemma

Thanks. I've got the temporary heater in place. The fish have returned to taking air from the surface at a normal rate. This is the second heater I've lost. What causes heaters to loose their ability to regulate themselves? Can they be fixed?

    Heating Dilemma

I've got a problem with my 10 gallon tank, and I don't know what to do. It currently houses two Gouramis and a Betta. Last night, I noticed that the thermometer in my tank was reading in the mid 90's. This was alarming, as my heater was set at 79F. I took the thermometer out, and it...

I want to paint a clear coat on decorations

Clear polyurethane varnish is used on bamboo for aquariums... that may be an option.

    Shrinking Gouramis?

About two years ago, I brought home a pair of Gold Gouramis for a community tank I was keeping at the time. One of the Gouramis was more dominant and bullied the other, keeping it from getting access to food. Naturally, the more aggressive fish ate better and became larger. The less aggressive...

    Gourami

Gboy66 - Are they all staring at one point in the tank? ... I had a Betta once who, around feeding time would hang out near the fish food to keep an eye on things. bruinsbro1997 - Ahh. Perhaps another Gourami of the opposite gender? ... Its hard to be depressed when you have mating on the brain.

    Gourami

Is it the only Gourami in the tank? I had an unusually aggressive gold Gourami that I put in a 10 gal tank to herself after too many causalities. She would stare at her reflection in the glass. I often wondered if that was because she was alone. .... Do fish get lonely?

    Who owns a Betta

I breed bettas. I have three 1 gal "bachelor pads" one 10 gal "sorority house" one 5 gal "love shack" and another 5 gal "daycare."

    Cherry shrimp with a betta?

Congrats on the new tank, a filtered setup is the way to go. IMHO... If he is fighting his reflection, than it is not safe for him to have roommates. He will kill them. Shrimp are snacks for Bettas. I experienced this when I had 4 ghost shrimp in a filtered 5 gal with my Betta Fawkes. They...

    Please answer strange fish

The heated tank should speed up the betta's metabolism. Hopefully a water temperature closer a natural setting ~80F can help reverse the harm caused by the overfeeding. I breed bettas, and at room temperature 68 - 72F my bettas need about 2/3 of the food they would need at 80F.

    Ammonia in water

Ammonia in the tap water! *gasp* I lost a nearly a dozen tetras about a month ago and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why I continued to have ammonia in the tank after having removed the bodies and done several PWC's. So I went to my local fish store. They were having the same...

help, whats wrong with my guppies?!?!?!

Welcome to AA, There are a couple of problems that I see, The first problem is overcrowding. Starting small in an aquarium is starting much smaller than you might think. You would have been good to put in one or two guppies, and gradually worked up to five or six. 35L is just under a 10G tank...

    loud music and fish

I agree about heavy bass being stressful to fish. Bass the way that it is used in some music is very unnatural. Over time, this bass would be a significant stress factor to tank inhabitants.

Ideas for stocking my 10 gals

Neons do better if they are in a larger group. I'd aim for 10-12 neon tetras. They will look great and add a lot of depth to your tank. If you begin to notice algae in the tank, otto cats will do the trick. They are a great little algae eater. -- Guppies are a good suggestion, but you would...

What looks like soapy bubbles. . .

Some filter outputs can cause bubbles to form on the surface of the water, but they usually don't look soapy. I haven't used a Fluval so I can't speak from experience with that kind of filter.

Where to put a qt tank?

I keep my QT/Hospital Tank on my dresser in my bedroom. Being a 10 gal tank, it fits up there quite nice. I like keeping it there because I can give it extra care and don't have to go out of my way to get to it. Also, that keeps my QT tank separate from my other tank, allowing me to keep the...
