Are these filters okay to use?

So I was wandering around the bowels of my local Home Depot the other day and I ran across their very small mounted water filtration section. Several of them seemed quite cheap, in a reasonable sort of way, and I was wondering if they were okay to use in a planted aquarium. GXWH04F with FXWTC...

    3/4" Overflow- Which return pump?

The 3/4" is fine going from your overflow to your sump. I'd use 1/2" from your sump back into your tank, and I really wouldn't think you'd need much more than 150-200 gph. At 200 gph you're doing 20x your tank volume, but it really does depend on what you have in the tank. There's a pretty...

When to start fertilizing and/or running co2?

I'm about five days in and all the ph/nitrate/nitrite/ammonia levels are where I want them, but I was planning on consistently running a 25% change every day for another week or so, and then changing to my "real" bulbs. I was running the normal t5 bulbs the fixture came with as a part of the...

    Is my neighbor on drugs?

The smart thing to do would be to talk to him. (I'm assuming it's a him) Point out that you're part of a great aquarium community and offer to help. That way you know exactly what's on the other side of the wall and can be prepared for whatever disaster that may or may not await you.

When to start fertilizing and/or running co2?

I'm just curious to see when I'm supposed to start running the fertilizing treatments and/or co2. I've got a 55 gal that currently has slightly over 1 wpg with two 48" T5's for the silent cycle but will have around 2 wpg once the cycle is complete. I've got around 27 plants total, including...

    Sump questions

I'm in the build stages of a 55 fresh water planted tank, and I wanted to go ahead and tackle a sump. I've got an extra 10 gallon standard tank and I was thinking of doing a diy even though I know that's kind of small. I know I can get the baffles cut at at home depot, and I've got the basic...

    New 55 gal, need suggestions

Well, I've kept a 29 gallon planted tank for about two years now, so I figure I've earned the chance at something larger. So I went out a built a stand for my 55 gallon tank that's been sitting unused for almost that long, and now I'm getting into the setup stage. Since I really only have...

    Mold on New Driftwood

I bought a piece of driftwood from a lfs. I have no idea what kind of wood it is, but it's pretty much the root ball of a small tree and still has a number of the roots sticking out to the side. Since it's quite an odd shape I was only able to boil certain sides, and now that I've submerged...

25 tall planted, trying to decide on backdrop

Black backgrounds do tend to make plants and fish pop, but if you're going for a more subtle or natural look I'd go with either a brownish color that would be a similar shade to either the substrate or the table it's on. You can always hit up the paint store and grab some of those little color...

DIY tank decor and misc questions

My gut instinct would be a no-go on the plastic flowers in the tank. If you've ever noticed that bottled water has an expiration date, it's because the plastic actually degrades and releases particles in the water. Most plastic aquarium plants are engineered to be submersed and are...

DIY glass hoods for a 55 FW?

What if you had a piece of glass/plexi that was just big enough to cover the light fixture and left the remaining space open. Depending on your lighting, you might have to create some extra venting for heat dissipation, but I'm thinking with flouros you should be fine with a semi-enclosed setup.

Fiddler Crabs and Brackish Water questions.

I just purchased three fiddler crabs and had a few questions. Originally I had them set up in a freshwater planted (I know I know) tank while I was finishing the setup and cycling on their tank. Now they're in their own 10g with the standard sand hill to one side but I'm stumped on a few...

My family things this site is awful...

So... I've been a member for only a couple of days and I'm already contemplating some crazy things. Basically I'm looking at quitting my job in the next few weeks so I can stay on here full time to read all of the amazing articles and build everything from a new stand to a RO/DI filter myself...
