    Back siphon

Every thing you have said is true, they do require more maintenance to keep them clean. To me, it's just another item on my maintenance list. Some folks cut it very close on overflow. To me it's just making sure. Well have got to run and maintenance some tanks, thanks for the discussion...

    sw feeder fish

Most folks who feed live, use comet goldfish, the problem here is 2 fold as I see it. 1). store's don't feed there comets, there isn't any nutritional value. 2). feeding live can cause health problems. 3). I only use comets to start fish feeding, then switch to fresh shirmp, squid. I'm sure...

    Help me cool my top...

It also looks like you might be able to use the 4" fans, on the ends between the stands legs. From the pic's there might be enough room. Only draw back is it won't look as nice. But maybe better than fan's in the hood on top. Let us know what you decide. 8)

just got a tank that died

IMO, Throw it all in the trash, clean tank and start fresh. What your trashing is cheap, so to save a little $ might cost you big in the future. 8)

    Overflow question

If I'm understanding you correctly, you must have a counter-current skimmer?? This would not be enough water pressure to run a venturi skimmer. I hope I'm understanding your question correctly.

You want me to put it where????

All of the things, with the carpet and traffic area's are important but the one thing no-one has mentioned is other source's of light that might affect the tank. eg. across the room from a picture window where the sun come's in or a mirror on the wall that would reflect light on to the tank...

    Garlic extract question

Try and find out what the LFS was feeding, he's not used to that food. Try some frozen brine shimp plus or live brine. I'm sure he keep one of those down 8)

    nasco tang

This is one of the biggest problems I have with LFS, is that they don't ask whats in your tank or what size or any thing else. They just want to sell fish without any regard for the outccome.. If they knew your situation and said that it would be ok, then find a new store. They should give...

    Puffer eating problem

One of my clients has a juvenile porcupine puffer, ( 3-4) in. The fish developed "Lockjaw". Diet has alway been frozen krill. I took the fish and force feed with a pureed mixture of octopus, squid, shrimp, and pea's and a supplement of Vita-Chem, in food and in tank water. We force feed with...

Yellow tail Pygmy and tank in trouble

First of all, DO NOT use copper in your display tank! Sounds like ick or velvet from what your describing, and it sounds as if was brought on by stess. A FW dip isn't the correct treatment. A couple of questions? 1. were you treating while the fish was in quarantine, after the first F/W...

Why use acrylic for SW rather than glass?

You drill your acrylic tank to better install the filter system under the tank. With glass you have the pre-filter and skimmer box hanging on the back of the tank. With drilling the acrylic tank you can drain from the bottom and the water will flow more efficiently.Plus it hides everything.

    Clowns in a 20 g

Sure, but damsels, blues and yellow tails are aggressive. Chromis would be better, but think about 2 perc's and a smaller long tentacle, with LR and reasonable lights. this would work for your 20 gal. Tank is small so you can't get carried away. 8)

A small bow in the front, is normal. Tank will also bow in back opening, where HOB filter would be. :D

    New tank. High ammonia

Just a point of concern, did your LFS know you were just starting to cycle, and sold you the flame anyway??? Or did they not know??? If they knew and told you the flame was ok for this situation, thats a problem

LFS's The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!!!

A place to visit here in Portland, is Seahorse Aquarium on lombard. Guys name is Woody Wood, he's disabled and in a wheel chair. Its amazing what he knows and what he's done. Now don't get me wrong, this is a hole in the wall, in his garage, kinda nasty and dirty, but worth a visit. As for...

results of tests agauin all help needed thanks

I'm sure your LR is fine, the die off will also add to the cycling process. Just monitor your tests. In six months, you won't think it was the same rock. Patience is the key to this game.

    Chronic ammonia spiking :o(

I may be getting into this conversation a little late, but here goes. You would be better off to get rid of that Fluval, and get something you can work with. Emperor 400 good choice, it gives you options. Also do an extensive gravel vac, get all that garbage out. try SG @ 1.024 or 5, with...
