It also looks like you might be able to use the 4" fans, on the ends between the stands legs. From the pic's there might be enough room. Only draw back is it won't look as nice. But maybe better than fan's in the hood on top. Let us know what you decide. 8)

IMO, Throw it all in the trash, clean tank and start fresh. What your trashing is cheap, so to save a little $ might cost you big in the future. 8)

All of the things, with the carpet and traffic area's are important but the one thing no-one has mentioned is other source's of light that might affect the tank. eg. across the room from a picture window where the sun come's in or a mirror on the wall that would reflect light on to the tank...

Try and find out what the LFS was feeding, he's not used to that food. Try some frozen brine shimp plus or live brine. I'm sure he keep one of those down 8)

You drill your acrylic tank to better install the filter system under the tank. With glass you have the pre-filter and skimmer box hanging on the back of the tank. With drilling the acrylic tank you can drain from the bottom and the water will flow more efficiently.Plus it hides everything.
