    200 gallon

Not hating on you. Most people don't admit or see anything wrong with it and keep doing it. At least you understand the potential results and plan not to do it in the future. I'm not sure if you mentioned this to your dad yet, but he has a good size tank to do a really nice African Cichlid...

    Red Devil Cichlids?

I hate cleaning rocks and sand. I vaguely remember cleaning about 150lbs and black 3M color quartz and about 250-300lbs of PFS. Congrats on the baby, my wife and I had a baby girl this May, its been awesome so far, both the fun stuff and the not so fun.

If they are a good size he should be good for now, if not he will just have to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get clogged and the flow gets reduced and have to clean them more often.

    200 gallon

I agree, its not suggested or recommended. Especially when feeding requirements differ, ph and hardness differ, and often times the way they communicate is different. In some very rare instances it can work, but usually in a really large tank.

    Red Devil Cichlids?

Nice looks similar to my tank when I first started it. Not sure if anyone suggested it yet, but outdoor landscaping yards are a great place to get tons of flat type rock (slate, etc) really really cheap. When we moved about 3 years ago, I switched the gravel to black, I liked it but I think...

Questions about a rescued tank and fish

Check out infinit aquatics, Rich is in Socal and usually has awesome deals on filters and fish. He is a vendor on a couple other fish boards I belong too, and I've ordered fish from him a few times along with a filter on another occassion. Nice guy to deal with and never had any issues.

Questions about a rescued tank and fish

Wow, 50% off a new tank is pretty good. Are you looking to go with a canister for filtration or a couple large HOB?

Questions about a rescued tank and fish

Not a problem. If you haven't checked craigslist it's a great place to find used tanks and equipment, especially in Socal. Goodluck.

Questions about a rescued tank and fish

Flowerhorns are a hybrid of several S/C American Cichlids, I don't recall which ones off the top of my head. The Flowerhorn (FH) will eventually outgrow the 40gal, if it hasn't been stunted in its previous home. A 55gal would work if it is a female and stays under 12 inches, if it is a male a...

What filtration is he running on it? Oscars are very messy fish and his water parameters can crash with out adequate filtration and regular water changes. Post some pics of his tank when you get a chance.

    Red Devil Cichlids?

Sucks they died. Nice, I had a 135gal mbuna tank for about 3-4 years, they breed like crazy, even though I wasn't planning on it. About 1.5 years ago i sold the fish and the tank and filled the nice big 9ft hole in the wall with a 240g. Post some pics of your 150g if you have a chance.

Opps, was going off the dates of the last few posts. Any update of the fish?

    Green Terror questions

I'd go with a slightly larger tank, 55g or a 65g would be better, if you plan to keep him solo in a tank. Species Profiles -- Cichlid-Forum

    Red Devil Cichlids?

Chances are the Red Devils he has are hybrids of Midas Cichlids, unless he got them from a reputable vendor like Jeff Rapps. My understanding is about 90-95% of the Red Devils and Midas found in the aquarium trade (what you find at LFS and box pet stores) are hybrids of each other. If you...

I can't remember what silicone it was that you can get at lowes/HD that is safe in Aquariums, I think it was GE silicone 1 but you should confirm this, got to Monster Fish Keepers and do a search on silicone and you should be able to find it there. You can get a tube that fits on a caulking gun...

    Tiger Oscar Food Suggestions

If you do feeders quarantine them for at least a week, 2 weeks is better. There is also a study that I can't recall the name of, it dealt with fish eating mammal meat and how fish feed mammal meat have deposits that end up in the liver because their digestive system isn't designed for it...

    Tankmate for a Firemouth Cichlid

Agreed with Acer. Your tank is pretty much stocked with just one already.

    Adding mbuna

Keep an eye on things, with African Cichlids you normally over stock them, and have lots of filtration, to help keep aggression down. If you start seeing problems you might need to add more so the dominant fish can't pick on just one or two or three fish. Makes it harder for the dominant fish...

    155 gal - what do I need???

If the tank is a good deal then jump on it, if you don't you will regret it later. The bigger the tank the larger the options you have for stocking fish and the type of fish you stock. A larger tank will be able to remain stable longer than a smaller tank. This comes at a cost though, you...

    Rock Salt in 55g

You want to be care when using salt on fish that have no scales, like catfish. I avoid using salt in tanks that have catfish. When I do use salt I use salt for water softners, the ones that look like rock salt. I normally use salt when I need to remove ich and raise the temp or introduce some...

    acrylic care and cleaning

If you have a tap plastics in your area, they have tons of stuff to use on acrylic. I used their products on my acrylic tank. Some of their products are also mentioned in one of the more known acrylic tank builders, can't remember which one it was though.
