This is my 75g after 9 month

Really nice. I'm switching from a 50gal fowlr to reef in the same tank. Right now I have reef rock in the tank seasoning a bit. Next I will install the sump and skimmer. Wish me luck. It's an exciting step and a scary one.

    reef lighting ... need help

:nono: Trying to get algae under control, I reprogrammed my light fixture. Now, when I start buying corals, how long must the lights be on during a 24 hr. period. I have T5 white and blue and LED blue for night then the light goes off for about 3/4 hrs. I'm eager to know which is best for a...

    Fishless Cycling Question?

I'd continue testing it for a week or so to see if the nitrites stay down. If they do, add a fish and keep a close watch. If the tank stays steady, I'd say it was cycled. Good luck.

what to use for ammonia source?

Use pure ammonia. If you're confused about it, if you shake the bottle and it foams, don't use it. And, there are several very good articles here at AA that will take you through the cycling process day by day. I used it and it worked great. Good luck.

    ro systems

 I will be redoing my 50 gal saltwater tank from fowlr to a small reef over the course of several months. Starting out really small. I know I'll need a lot more lighting and I'll talk to my lfs about it. This is the equipment I now have on my aquarium. 1 Fluval canister filter, 1...

    fowlf to reef

flreefer: Thanks. My reference book does state the butterfly might occasionally nip at polyps but should be safe with soft corals. I'm planning on starting out small and see what happens. I think my fish are well fed which should help.

    fowlf to reef

Hi NU-NU. Ok, here's the deal. I finally found my trusted book, "Marine Fishes". It became misplaced after we moved. 50gal. tank. Here's my fish: 2 clowns, 1 damsel, 1 canary wrasse 1 coral beauty, 1 Klein's butterfly, 1 scooter blenny, 1 goby, 1 med/lg snail and 1 brittle star. According...

    fowlf to reef

Well I realized the truth last week that I can't convert to reef. I was suspicious about my fish and I was correct. My selection of fish doesn't suit a reef tank...i.e, eating corals:facepalm: Plan 2 is I've decided to aquascape with base rock and watch it, over time, advance and become live...

    Red alert is over.

Tetra1990 Good. Last summer our central air broke. Of course it was 102 outside. I stopped looking at our inside thermostat when the house was at 98. I was floating ice cubes in the tank. A valuable lesson learned. Now, in the summer I fill up three qt. plastic bags and keep them in the...

    white dot invasion

Patrick93, Leighton79, Carried, CrystalA and Schism: Thanks for responding so quickly. I just finished doing a 30% water change. The water was the dirtiest I've ever seen it and I had done a water change 5 days ago. I usually do a WC every 7 to 10 days depending. Inside the canister filter and...

    white dot invasion

manbeast. I have one snail, good size, don't know what kind. It's a 50 gal fowlr. I'm thinking of converting to a reef. Not entirely. Probably start out really slow. The tank has been up and working for a good three years and now, these white dots. I thought perhaps some kind of calcium...

    white dot invasion

I'm having a problem with white dots invading my aquarium. They are attached to the glass, the UV sterilizer and in the canister filter. I have to use a metal spatula to remove them. They're the size of a pin head and sometimes the dots form in a snake form. Any thoughts?

    Need reef info freak

Not much. Maybe 15lbs. It's been be running about 3 yrs. Has a nice purple color on one side almost looks like a lava flow. I was hoping to create a nice design with new unseasoned rock, placing it in the tank and perhaps place one coral on the live rock that's in there already for a start.

    Need reef info freak

When changing from fwlr to reef, I would like to replace my substrate, like 1/3 at a time. I'll replace it with fresh argonite sand as I go along. I feel it would be best if I did this before thinking about buying any corals. Also, would it be better if I bought rock, not live rock, set it up...

White film on the surface of the water?

I know you said you have plenty of surface movement. If your water movers are not already pointed up toward the surface do so. I've been able to to keep film down to a small patch that is driving me nuts. But, it's 100% better than it once was. Good luck.

    Fishless Cycling Question?

Hi. How are you doing with your cycling. I'm sure you knew to use only ammonia without any additives...Shaking the bottle and seeing suds is not good. Good luck. This fishless cycling worked great for me. Just be patient.

    From fwlr to reef question

Thanks Somethingsfishy. Your info is very helpful. I got the or to lr. I have a good lfs in Dover, De. She'll probably try to talk me out of reefing but I think my mind is made up. I'm tired of artificial decorations and cleaning them. And, I'm going to go with a plain blue back so that...

    From fwlr to reef question

I have a 50gal. cycled saltwater tank that's been up and running now for more than two years and fish are happy and healthy. I want to convert to a reef tank and I'll be needing a lot of help as I know nothing about corals, etc. My first of many upcoming ?s is how much light would be necessary...

    Skimmer ques.

skimmer ques. Thanks Austin's dad. I just ordered on-line a SeaClone 100. The reviews looked good and Drs. Foster & Smith are a reliable place to buy fish supplies. It's a hob that looks pretty easy to install. Thanks again.

    Skimmer ques.

Need advice re: buying a protein skimmer. I'm finding a hazy film forming on top of the water in my 50 gal. saltwater tank. I have a water mover in the tank pointing up and it clears most of the film except for one small pocket at the other end of the tank. Is there a good protein skimmer...

    coral beauty

Been away for a couple months but I have a great story. I bought a beautiful coral beauty two weeks ago. After acclimating for a couple hours he swam into my tank. I noticed he only swam in a four inch square and he even had a "tic". This went on for the first day and part of the second...

Thanks a lot for your input. It's something I'd never think would kill fish. I do clean the carpet with Oreck dry cleaning. The machine really stirs the stuff into the carpet and probably into the air. Thanks.
