I think this all depends. I have kept Tropheus in small numbers (5) and kept Demasoni in small numbers as well with very good results. No deaths and constant spawning. It can be done. One of the best looking fish specie I think. Here is a pic of mine:

I keep Tropheus and Simochromis. I can tell you the temperature is fine as long as you have good flow-aeration in your tank. Make sure acclimate them. Take your time. As for setting up the tank. I never had problems with lots of rocks or just 2 rock piles on either end.
