I use to have trouble with mine when I first put the chaeto in then I switched to a stronger 23watt bulb and 24 hour lighting in the sump and it seems to have corrected it. Not sure if that is the issue but why not try it for a week or so to see if it works. Steve

Evaporation I'm guessing. Top off with RO/DI water other wise your algae is going to get a lot worse. My evaporation varies depending if it's dry or wet. Steve

No need for a protein skimmer in a qt. Basically you want it as simple as possible. A canopy with a simple light, HOB filter, and like Kurt mentioned a pvc pipe for a place for the fish to hang out. Change water frequently and you're good to go... An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of...
