'Shimmy' disease and a deformed platy fry

An t-iasg, Thanks for the reply and the links. I picked up a nitrate test- 5ppm, so I guess the java moss is keeping that under control. I don't think the fry are causing stress. They still spend a lot of time hiding in the grass. I'll add the salt and see how it goes. Will 2 tbsp in a 20 gal...

'Shimmy' disease and a deformed platy fry

Hi all, I have a 20 gal setup since January. I can't seem to keep platies and guppys(mostly the females) alive for more than a couple months. They always succumb to the 'shimmy disease.' Water params are: Ammonia-0, NitrIte-0, pH-7.6. I don't have a NitrAte test, but I change at least 6 gal a...

Do the red claws need a place to come out of the water? My son has been bugging me to get him one.

    Female platies flashing

I have a male and 2 female platies that I bought 2 weeks ago. I know there's always a good chance that platies are pregnant when you bring them home. They aren't fat but their abdomens do look rectangular while the male's is more rounded. The females have been flashing for the last couple days...

Fish that were OK before medication now sick

Here's an article I found about enhancing your fishes' immune systems. I stumbled onto it when I was searching for info on the relationship between antibiotic therapy and yeast infection. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/sept2003/feature.htm

    Losing fish

Thanks Orca, Nothing new in the way of deco or anything like that. Bucket, siphon and measuring cup have never touched anything but old tank water and new tap water. I did a large water change and vacuumed every inch of gravel. We'll see what happens.

    Losing fish

I feed them regular flakes and freeze dried bloodworms on occasion. They weren't bloated at all. There were no outward signs of anything being wrong. The club jungle link didn't work. I read through the other one and this was the closest match except that they were not newly arrived fish: •...

    Losing fish

I don't, really. I just know that those particular antibiotics won't hurt the nitrifying bacteria. BTW, the other cory died yesterday. He was fine Sunday. When I got home from work last night my wife said he'd been hiding all day and when the platies would poke at him, he'd start rolling like an...

    Losing fish

Thanks M, I'm thinking big water change w/ a very thorough vacuuming (every inch of gravel instead of half), add an airstone and maybe go with a Penguin 330 instead of the 170. Something has to work. I don't like the idea of medicating indiscriminately, but I could treat the tank for gram...

    Losing fish

One of my cories died yesterday. Wednesday or Thursday he became very lethargic, his color darkened considerably and he stopped eating. I'm at a total loss as what the problem could be. I'm losing fish in seemingly perfect water. I tested it, then had a friend test it with his kit, and took a...

    Losing fish

That's what I was thinking. The one I found couldn't have been more than 2 days old and you could already tell he was a red wag platy. He was about 5 mm long.

    Losing fish

Hi folks. I just need a little guidance here. I've lost some fish and can't figure out exactly why. I apologize for the long post, but I don't want to miss anything. Here are my params: Aquarium size and shape. Standard 20 Gal. Substrate type and depth. Medium sized gravel. 2" deep...

Help! Deep Six hydrometer won't register

They seem to be doing better. At this rate, the spots should all be gone in a couple days. After that, I'll leave the heat up and the salt in for a week. That should take care of it. Thanks for all your help.

Help! Deep Six hydrometer won't register

I finally got it to read. When I got to 3/4 cup, I got tired of mixing, so I put the last 1/4 cup into a chinese soup container and let it sit in the bottom of the tank. When I got home form work last night it was completely dissolved. I stuck the hydrometer in and it read 1.003. Does that sound...

Help! Deep Six hydrometer won't register

FF, The arm on the hydrometer swings freely. Allivymar says you need 1.03 to effectively treat ich. I just figured a whole cup of salt would at least give me a reading, and I could go from there.

Help! Deep Six hydrometer won't register

I'm trying to treat a case of ich with salt and heat before resorting to medication. I have a 20 gal tank. I upped the temp to 86° and doubled the salt from 4 tbsp to 8 tbsp. I've been adding salt and trying to get a reading with the hydrometer to no avail. I'm up to a cup of salt, which is 32...

Is ich usually incidental to something else?

I've been trying to figure out what went wrong. Water params good, tank not overcrowded, temp stable. Only thing that changed was the addition of 2 female mollies. As far as the salt, I started with only 2 tbsp total. When I saw the spots, I added 2 more to bring it to 1 tbsp per 5 gal.

Is ich usually incidental to something else?

Came down with a case of ich. Two of the platies have spots. Everyone else looks ok. Increased salt to 1 tbsp per 5 gal and raised thermostat on heater to 86°. I'm trying to figure out if the fish are sick because of the ich, or if the ich is incidental to some other malady. The platies and...
