    rubble in sump

Well, according to Seachem, their gravel is highly porous. The gravel has macropores, which they claim is ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria and is able to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter. You can read...

    rubble in sump

I dismantled my sump setup this weekend and cleaned it out, with almost 2 years old it did have a bit of stuff in there. Not too bad considering but I revised the setup based on several posts I've read here and RC forum. Here is the way it's set up. Please note I forgot to draw the HOB...

    rubble in sump

I've been advised by a long time customer of my LFS to place rubble in my sump after the filter sock. I've read various posts on the internet and it seems may advise against it, mostly because cleaning that area is a pain, no matter what your filter sock catches, you'll still end up with...

    At a loss

I recommend you start with one variable change at a time. Limit your HO lights to 6 hours per day. Run moon lights longer if you like. Then watch and see how that affects the algae.

    Moorish Idol

Couple pics of the idol eating The approach to his favorite treat... Positioning himself...investigating the weak spots of the clam. Begins to pull on the little bit of flesh sticking out of the clam in order to get it open... smart fellow ... cheers Wael

    Moorish Idol

That is a great thread. Glad to see others are successful with Moorish Idols. I've had one for some time now, about 9 months or so. He didn't know how to eat when I first got him and had to buy him live little neck clams from the fishermans market, open about 2 or 3 a day and feed him. I keep...

    RO vs Spring Water

I forgot to mention that I'm running at phosphate reactor, which I've recently replaced the phos inside with Seachem Sea Gel and I'm running two bags of Seachem Purigen.

    RO vs Spring Water

I've been using 5 gallon drums of spring water for my QT and DT. In my area, the tap water is not drinkable. I've been thinking of getting a RO/DI filter to handle the little bit of hair algae I got in my tanks. But I worry that the RO will not be as safe because of the desalinated tap water we...

    Moorish idol feeding

Yes, but so far they haven't accepted it. Keep in mind also that I bought them the day they arrived at the supplier. He told me they haven't been trained yet. It must be a traumatic experience for them to be plucked out of the ocean, packed and shipped in a matter of 48 hours before they're in...

    Moorish idol feeding

Thanks, the home made food is made up of shrimp, mussels, squid, nori, Seachem vitamins and Seachem garlic liquid. Still they want to pick their food, preferring to eat the Caroline on the LR until picked up live clams. I'm still unable to upload the photos of them eating the clams, so I'll try...

    Moorish idol feeding

As some may know, I recently bought a pair of Moorish Idols and I posted a concern I had regarding my yellow tang picking on them. Well after removing the tang and placing him in the QT the moorish idols were beginning to relax but still a bit picky about the fresh food I made. The were very shy...

Yellow tang trouble with Moorish Idol

So tang is out and given to a friend of mine. The tank is calm again. The idols are loving the clams, they already opened some and ate them. It's fantastic to see them eating!

Yellow tang trouble with Moorish Idol

Oh well, a week after taking the yellow tang out of the DT and changing the rockscape, he's back in the DT today. First thing he did is go after the Moorish Idols. I think he's got to go back to the LFS. I won't tolerate any fish picking on another in my DT. I bought some small white shell...

    Ammonia in DT

That's a good point. I had several fish in there before and used Seachem ParaGuard in there for treatment. After treatment I made a PWC and added the carbon filter back in. It's been fishless for about 1 month. I added bacteria to keep the filters replenished a few times. Perhaps I should...

Yellow tang trouble with Moorish Idol

Thanks, I'll try to keep the yellow tang in QT for a week and rearrange the LR and corals a bit to make it feel different. The tank is about 125 gallons. The idols are about full grown but the tang is still young, about 3" long. I picked up the idols directly from the supplier so I got them...

    Ammonia in DT

I have 110 liter DT with powerhead and corner filter. I've had filled with no fish for a while now. It's bare bottom. I want to have this tank always ready but it seems that ammonia levels are always in the 4 range. Should I add some LR? I plan to add meds to this tank if needed. I was thinking...

Yellow tang trouble with Moorish Idol

I bought a couple of Moorish Idols and placed them in my DT after my yellow tang has been in there much before them. The yellow tang is much smaller than the idols but he just won't leave them alone. Constantly trying to hurt them with his white tail blade. I remember a video on YouTube where...

    UV in a reef tank

To prolong the life of your light, I would place it in the return line. You don't want to gunk up the quartz tube inside. I'm running 55watt unit in my tank that's about the size of yours. But my agenda is different. Just like there is no such thing as too much filtration, I believe there is...

Decreasing micro bubbles in return pipe

I just noticed, my return pump is 2500lph, not 3500. So it's about 660gph. Sorry about that.

Decreasing micro bubbles in return pipe

While setting up my DT initially, I designed the return pipe from the sump with minimal bends in order to allow the pump to be efficient. there is a total of 3 bends. I placed a ball valve on the return pipe, which proved invaluable. If the ball valve is fully open I get a lot of micro bubbles...

    crushed coral replacement question

Well, I replaced the front half of the DT substrate. I bought 4 buckets of live sand and aragonite, each bucket has 2 bags which are 10lbs each. I think the plan is to stop there. I don't want to upset the balance I've worked so hard to achieve. While the idea was to help avoid the issues many...

    crushed coral replacement question

That would be nice but the only one I can find locally is the live sand aragonite. It's sold in large buckets. If I clean up the CC, would be ok to add the aragonite above it? Or is it not worth it? I thought it might be one way to bring up the substrate to 4" by adding 2" worth of the new...

    crushed coral replacement question

I've read a bit already about making such a swap, but wanted to hear from others of it's worth making the change based on what I wrote earlier.

    crushed coral replacement question

When I set up my DT, the LFS sold me crushed coral substrate and only put down about 2" worth. I asked him several times about using crushed coral and he pointed out that he's been using it for years and years in his tanks and never had a problem. When I mentioned that most websites recommend 4"...

Is it possible to have 3 flame angels in 1 tank?

They sold the the ones they had but they get them all the time and often house them together. When their next shipment arrives, I'll see how they set them up and how they behave. Thanks for the advice. Cheers Wael
